My favorite tennis tips:

From US great Tony Trabert: "Never change a winning game, always change a losing one."

From Harry Hopman, great Australian coach, when Rod Laver completed the Grand Slam: "That's good, now do it again."

I hope this makes sense and that I didn't make it too confusing:

Men play 5 out of 7 sets, women, 2 out of 3

To win a set, you must win 5 out of 7 "games," but it must be win by 2. That is, if the score is 4-4 and when someone wins one more to make it 4-5, they must win one more to win by 7. It is possible for a set to go a very very long time. 5-6, 6-6, 6-7, 7-7, 7-8, 8-8..... no winner yet.

To win a game, you must be the first to reach four points in the game, and the points are called such:
15, 30, 40, "game"
At game, you win. BUT, if it comes to 40-40, it's called deuce and you must win by two. That is, if it's 40-40 and the server wins a point, it's "advantage server." If the server does not win another point, it's back to Deuce and they keep playing until someone gets "advantage" and then the winning point in succession.

I hope this has made sense. Where to serve and other things related to the lines should be pretty clear.

Alex

I played in "whites", had a couple of Dunlop wood racquets strung with real gut, the balls were only available in white and there was no such thing as a tie-breaker . . . today's tennis is wussy compared to before.

The scoring in most matches is first person (or doubles team) to reach six (6) games, winning by two (2). There for if the score is 4-4 and one person wins the next 2 games, he wins the set. If the score is 5-5 and one person wins the next 2 games, the score is 7-5. If the score is 5-5 and each person wins a game, making the score 6-6, then a set tie-breaker is played. The tie breaker is scored by points, first to 7 winning by 2. First person to serve serves once from the duece (right) side, and then the other player serves twice, starting from the ad (left) side. You switch ends of the court after 6 points and continue until someone reaches at least seven points, winning by two. The exception to this is some of the major tournaments on the pro tour (Wimbledon, US Open) when tie breakers are not played at all or not played in the fifth set, when the score can go as high as necessary for on person to win by 2 games. It's sort of confusing the first few times you play, but it gets easier. Any other help you need, let me know. (I coach a high school team). Best of Luck BOB

Yes, men only play best of out 5 (not 7). Some of the Grand Slams and special tournaments don't allow the tie break in the final 5th set so the winner must win by 2 games so technically they could play more than 7 sets worth of games.

There's been talk about making the women play 5 sets at the Grand Slams because they want equal prize money. Let's hope Anna gets better at tennis

Howdy Blue Devil,
Even if they don't make the women play 5 sets all they have to do is show more doubles on tv where Anna does real good

The problem is Anna is usually out after the first round and they almost never show the first rounds

Yeah, they tend to use the women's doubles matches pre-taped as "fillers" during the Grand Slams and Anna has done well in the past with Martina Hingis.

Not sure if they should bother with the 5 sets for Women during the Slams...what's the point, it's going to be either Venus or Serena.

Howdy Blue Devil,
Tennis seems to run in cycles. The Williams sisters are on top but in a year or so that will change. They will still be close to the top but not on top. At least we can only hope so.

Ha! keep hoping

drbrandini :
When serving the server has to stand outside the court lines and serve diagonally to the reciever. The server has two chances to serve. The servers ball must land on the otherside of the net, without touching the net, into the box (Areas marked BOX on the diagram dependind on what side the server is serving from of course). If the net is touched but the ball lands outside the box the server must use their second serve. If the ball touches the net but lands in the box then the server can reuse their first serve. This always confuses people

The outside line of the tennis court is used only if you are playing doubles.

Oh and if the server steps onto the court before his raquet comes into contact with the ball thats called a foot fault and you have to serve again using your second serve.

I played in college....

Here's how it worked; one person stands on one side of the net and one stands on the other. You take a rug beater and hit a soft baseball at the other dude. There's a guy sitting in a lifeguard chair at the side of the net. If he says "fault", something's wrong and if you just hit the ball then you have to do it over again. Every once in a while he will say that one or the other player has an 'advantage' over the other. Not sure what that was all about, but if you missed the baseball on the next shot he would make you switch sides. After about 30 minutes he would say "game, set and match!!" and you'd go shake hands with the guy across the net. Most of the time my opponent would jump over the net like some kind of showoff, but I never let it bother me or hit anybody with my rug beater.
