24 Speed Bike

I just got a 24 speed bike. I managed to get the chain on both derailleurs, now I'm wondering if the chain should have been put on any special way in relation to the gear shift knobs on the handlebars. Can anyone tell me? Should I have had the chain put on the lowest gear and had the gear shift knobs in the lowest gear shift position or what?

You can sort of line it up, but pedaling it will make it find its place. If there is a grinding sound there are adjustment screws to fine tune it. Google "tuning bike derailleurs" you will find everything you need to know, make sure the brakes work
