Alaska

Has anyone been to Alaska? If so, what part and what was it like?

I understand Alaska is beautiful but the pics I've seen of it are kind of dreary looking.

Alaska

Beauty is in the eye of the .......
It does depend on what you like. The Kenai Pennisula has always been my favorite. Prudhoe Bay is "dreary, bleak" but it has an awesome weirdness that makes you remember it. If you go take lots of time to explore.

It's getting downright balmy in Anchorage about now . . .

If you go, head out to Homer, the semi-official "end of the road" and of course, Tom Boddet's famous comment about Alaskans, "they're the ones that went to the end of the road and didn't have the sense to turn around . . ."

I have family members that have made Alaska home, I have spent months at a time there screwing around. It's a playground for Outdoorsman, not the kind that put on tight shorts and take pictures of empty shell casings either REAL MEN!!! The others get lost.

Many many times. Lived in the Yukon for some time, and often visited Fairbanks, Haines and Skagway. Hiked and climbed in Denali often.

This summer we're on our way again to Kluane and on to Denali. Greatest hiking on the planet. If you're "allergic" to cold, be aware: snow can come ANY time. Spent more than a couple July mornings digging a tent out of snow. Also, despite the cold, bugs can be bad too. I use a tent in Denali because of both these problems (using a tarp gets old fast in deep snow).

From Hainse Junction in the Yukon to Haines is the Haines Highway. I can't think of any place with more bald eagles if you're an eagle nut.

You can hike out of Kathleen Lake in the Yukon and if you're string enough, end up in Alaska. Lots of slogging though. Better to go onto Denali.

Check the bookstores

The best Alaska trip reference material is an annual book called the Milepost. It will give you a good idea of what the trip will be like. It usually sells out by mid summer, so go look for it now. I made the trip in 1980 (10,000 miles in 3 weeks).

It's a great trip. Everyone who really enjoys driving should do the Alaska Highway at least once. And, yes, they do quite literally have actual clouds of skeeters and other bugs up there.

Texas vs Alaska

There has been this ongoing rivalry with TX and AK. I usually arm my self with the best of AK jokes for those natives that want to spar. I really got the upper hand one day with the Mgr of the Hotel. Flustered with it all he stated "If you Texas don't watch it we are going to split AK in half and then TX will be the third largest state. He won the match.
