What kind of Internet Connection do you have?

I set up this poll just to satisfy my curiousity. A little over a year ago, we still had dial-up here at home (T1 of course at school) and I'm wondering just how many people have gone to high speed. I guess I'm trying to figure out what the mainstream is now. Thanks for participating.

Dial-up at home. For now. Soon as somebody decides to move us up to the 21st century here, I'll go with either DSL or cable.

You missed a choice - satellite. I am sharing a sattelite broadband connection with my neighbour.

I have to laugh. According to Direcway, we cannot set up their connection on a network, yet we currently have 9 PC's between the two of us all hooked up to the one connection - via two 100Base-T networks linked via a wireless bridge

If I had my choice, it would be a cable hook up. But I live with three other guys and the DSL was already here when I moved in.

Of course the cost is split four ways, so it's not that bad.

T3 lines here at school. When I am at home, it is DSL. I feel bad for all of you still on dial up. I remember those days, so very painful

Satellite/Directway here too. The only alternative to dialup in my area. Don't know why they would say that you couldn't use it with a network. I know that some of their features only work with the system that is attached to their modem.

Their comment to my neighbour was that their system was not networkable since it used a USB port to connect to the computer, and told him that they were working on one that could be. Turns out that their "networkable" setup is basically what we already set up at home.

I'm guessing that the idiot on the far side of the phone didn't know what he was talking about.

Having started out at 300 baud and the old ASCII BBS systems, having cable at home and frame relay at work is great.

So how spendy is the satellite set-up? How is the speed? Comparable to DSL?
I have DSL at work(that's when i'm usually on here), so when I come home and get on, it's a real painful experience!!

My guess would be most people have dial up at home and high speed at work where most of the downloading occurs. One of the advantages of a DSL is the phone line is free and it is on all the time.

However there are disadvantages associated with the DSL that is hackers tend to seek out these DSL connections because of the available bandwidth and ease in connecting. This could be solved through the use of firewall protections; anti virus protection. and turning off computers when they are not in use. Also the connection is faster for receiving data (downloading) than it is for sending data (uploading) over the Internet.

I got tired of dial up at home. So when cable arrived in my neighborhood, I have the distribution bix in my front yard, I go the self install kit and did it. I also have a hub.
