1997 Ford F150 Shaking

I have a 1997 Ford F150 with 202,000 miles on it.When driving at speed or when turning either direction the steering wheel shakes very badly.Any ideas on what this could be.

I'd check the front suspension components, specifically the ball joints.

Ball joints or steering components. And if its vibrating like that, I'd get it fixed before you crash!

The WHOLE frontend suspension system needs some TLC and fast!

Then check the bearings to be sure everything is tightened down PROPERLY and not either binding or sloppy...then get a decent wheel/tire balance and frontend alignment done AFTER the rest of the work is completed.

Then, drive happy.

As for the steering components, could it be the power steering pump.

Not really...when a pump goes out, so does the ability to turn the steering wheel in a normal fashion...i.e. It becomes difficult without great effort to turn the steering wheel, even when the vehicle is in motion.

There would have been groaning and whining coming from the power steering pump.

Ford trucks produced that time have notorious front end issues due to poor design and quality of parts. The original ball joints are part of the control arm. Recently I have replaced all ball joints, upper control arms, and sway bar links, my truck has only 55,000 miles. Now my front wheel bearings are starting to make noise.

Use quality parts such as TRW or Moog which allow replacement of the ball joints only and have grease fittings. The pitman arm is another problem area. I use a grease needle to lube it, no grease fitting on the original.

Sounds like a bad tire. I would jack up a tire and give it a spin to see if there is any wobble. Worn steering components dont make your wheel shake on their own they just make it feel worse. Out of balance tires or bent wheels cause the shake. Let us know what you find.

Then you've never driven an older vehicle with worn steering components...

Specifically, what was loose enough to cause such a vibration?

Driven plenty and have been a mechanic for 19 years. Worn parts can magnify the problem but its usually a balance or runout problem that causes the shake.
