DMV has wrong VIN #

I got new plates(vanity) and when I looked at the invoice, the paper that gives all my car's information has an error with my VIN #. It shows WCBCA... instead of WDBCA... . What does it mean if the DMV has the wrong VIN?

thats just the country of orgin I'm sure if you called them they could fix it for you but it may not be worth the hassel. whats your insurance card say?

Snibble 06-23-2003 06:27 PM

Insurance? Whats that? JUST KIDDING:D

The insurance card got the right info. Just the DMV has the one letter thats off.

It would be prudent to contact the DMV and get their records corrected. If/when you sell your car, the title will need to have the correct VIN!

In high school, one of my friend's sister's husbands would acquire (steal) harleys and weld up the VIN and then restamp a new VIN on it (yeah!!). His name was "Tiny" and he wasn't.

It might cause trouble sooner such as when you go for a vehicle inspection if the machines are linked to the DMV.

Ohio, atleast in my County... does not require car inspections. Just pay my yearly plate tags and drive!

I love not having inspections no extra stuff to worrie over :D

Or, how about if you should be stopped by your local Constabulary and he requests "license and registration, please".

I can see the next words from his mouth. "Hey Partner, check this out the VIN don't match. We must have us a car thief".

Nope:D But I figured people are getting tired of seeing it... so I changed it to something new for a change. I do use it in other forums(non-car related though).

just wanted to make sure because I cleaned out a bunch of webspace and I would have put it back up

Definately get it fixed, its such a pain when they screw up. It has happened to me before. Bring all your paperwork, I am sure it can be fixed, you will have to show them their mistake. Be patient with them though.

The high school dropouts they have running the counters at your typical DMV do this all the time. As long as your submitted documents (like the previous title) show the correct VIN you'll be able to get the title corrected. The sooner you do this the better.

In buying a car, you should take care to match the VIN shown on the existing title with the VIN plate on the vehicle.

You should make and keep a copy of the old title for your records.

You should verify the VIN number immediately at the DMV when they hand it to you.
