Do you like boiled peanuts? I am from Maryland and never had them until I joined the Marines and had boot camp down south. I was going through some stuff in my basement today and when I came across my old uniform (Semper Fi) I thought about how much I liked the boiled peanuts. Nobody up here in Maryland has ever heard of this southern delacasy.

Seems I recall we had a bit of a discussion a while back on boilt goobers.

Yes, I 've had them and yes I like them.

Tell some them folks to just head south on 95 until they see a "boiled peanut" sign, buy some and enjoy them. On second thought don't.

Easy to make yourself...

Buy unroasted peanuts. Dump them in a big pot with water. (maybe rinse them once, if you expect to be eating them with an extended pinkie)
Add a bunch of your favorite seasoning...Everglades seasoning works good. You could probably also use Emerils "essence", or something similar. Add a little (or a lot) of heat of your choosing.
Simmer for several hours... at least 2, but the longer the better. Nuts are done when you taste one, and it is soft throughout. (similar to when you check a potato for done-ness)

It's ok to leave them in the pot after turning off the heat. The next day, just turn the heat back on, simmer for a while (this ought to kill any beasties that might have grown overnight...unless you added enough hot sauce to start with ;) ) and enjoy them again.

If you're going to bring them to a party, start cooking them in the morning, so that you can be sure that they are done by the time you are ready to go.

Use a large slotted spoon to scoop them out. Keep another bowl handy for the shells, and plenty of napkins. Some like to suck the juice out of the shell first, before they tear it open. These darn things can be addictive, so watch yourself!

The best place for boiled peanuts is to tavel some of the back roads in south Georgia until you see one of the old general stores from years gone by and there is a big sign that says "Boiled Green Goobers". You look outside the store on the dirt parking lot and there is a great big black cast iron pot hanging over an open fire and some local person stirring the pot with a large stick, steam and all. What are they doing, why boiling those green goobers of course. Ah, the memories that come back from years ago.

The last boiled peanuts I had were bought several years ago at a gas station in Pasacagoula, MS and were in the cooler in a can. Times do change.

They sell them in a can too...but the darn things are tiny, mushy, and kinda bland. For another dollar or two, you can make your own, and they will be much, much better.

Boiled peanuts??? What do they taste like? I would make them myself just to try the, but the only peanuts I ever see are the roasted type. Where do you buy raw penuts? I go to a farmers market every Sunday and I have never seen them, yet again I was not looking for them either.

There's a boiled peanut stand about 2 miles from my shack. I can enjoy these tasty treats on occasion.

I like them and my Wife and father-inlaw have tried them and DON'T like them. They are born and raised on Long Island New Yorkers.
We lived in Charleston SC when I was flying C141'a in the Air Force Reserves. WE were ar a oyster shucking party and it was raining lightly. Now you can't let rain stop you from steaming oycters or eating them raw. So the beer was flowing and we were shucking while we had our raincoats on. My wife tried some boiled peanuts and just figured they had gotten soaked in the rain. I explained they were supposed to be that way.
My Father-inlaw. I stopped at a stand on the side of the road in South Carolina and he tried them. Boy, I'll tell you its hard to get a New Yorker to like boiled peanuts!!

Frank, I haven't found any in Califas yet. I don't think boiled peanuts have migrated out this way.

Bobby, I'm doing great. I haven't seen boiled goobers in a can...yet, but then again I'm not looking for then in a can. My gosh, that would just about ruin the experience.


Yes, spicy boiled peanuts are best, salty are next best. I have always had them served up in a warm paper bag. High class dining at it's best, even my favorite restuarant serves up your meal on a piece of butcher wrap.

Okay guys, thats it! I can not stand it any longer. I am on medical leave until the end of the month recovering from back surgery but am getting around real good now.

If there are raw peanuts in the Southbay area of LA. I am going to find some. I know they want be green but as long as they are raw and in the shell they will be okay. Not being green you just have to boil them longer and soak them more to get the shell soft so that you can suck the flavor out of the shell to get full benefit of this delicate morsel of undescribable pleasure.

Mike I can feel a good old fashion stomach ache coming on.

Got to go find peanuts.
