We often see threads for the highest mileage cars, but who has the lowest? A local MB dealership currently has for sale a 1990 190E 1.8 with just over 4,000km. Yes 4,000km. That's only 2,500 miles! Curiosity got the better of me and I had a look at it (not that I would want to buy an auto 1.8). It can only be described as "as new". They are asking $35k AUD for it. New price here in 1990 was $67k and the average used price now is around $8k - $12k. One wonders what it will be like when it starts getting used, if anyone could bring themselves to start putting more mileage on it.

I just recently purchased a 1984 300SD with an actual 77,000 miles and it runs and drives like a brand new car.

Its not mine but the dealer I work for has a 1989 560SL with 48 miles on it, thats right 48 miles. It has never been titled and still has the window sticker in the window.

You know a lot of dealers and owners have stowed 1989 560SLs away. Perhaps because its the last of an 18 year run, and the last chrome-laden SL. 48 miles, that's low!

A friend of mine has a W 123 240 D with 2700 km.

The Classic Center in Fellbach had a 500 SL R 107 with 129 km, which was sold to Japan.


I myself prefer the experienced cars. The one with the lowest mileage is also the oldest: The fintail with 67 tmiles.

I bet that 190E would be one troublesome car. Age is age, and time wears cars more than miles. All the seals are probably dried out, gaskets probably won't hold for long, and there might be a huge dose of corrosion in the engine. Fuel lines also don't do well sitting for long periods, and niether will the gas tank.

I would pay much less for a well used model with a good history. I know a woman that paid WAY too much for a 560SL with super low miles that ended up being the most expensive R107 SL in history after the super high price paid and the enormous list of repairs it required after it began driving.

Also, with the K-Jet and KE-Jet fuel injection you run into big problems with the piston in the fuel distributor when the car was sitting to long. Sometimes this can be fixed, very often you run into big numbers replacing it.

Hey 123c, why is your motto "don't shop at Walmart."? I think Walmart is much better than Kmart and Target. A Super Kmart store (very very big one) near my place was closed down several months ago, and I've just read in a newspaper that Walmart will take over it and have a grand opening early next year.

Hoorah, we'll have a big Walmart in the center of San Jose and I won't have to drive all the way up 101 N or down 101 S just to get to a Walmart store.

Just getting back to low mileage cars...

For what the dealer is asking for that 13 year old 190E 1.8, you could buy a new A160 Classic, a new Mini Cooper or a new Audi A3. They are all about $35k hear in Oz. As to the reliability of the 190E with just 4,000km in all that time one wonders. I guess it depends upon whether the 4,000 all happened in the first year and then no use or whether it was spread out over the whole period. I suggest the former as the story is that it was purchased by an elderly person whose health declined and was unable to drive it. I believe they subsequently passed away and the family decided to sell the car. I wonder how much the dealer paid for it. I would also hope that all filters, fluids and lubricants have been replaced. I couldn't help noticing the as-new in appearance, 13 year old Continentals. Despite plenty of remaining tread I believe they should be replaced.
