10 Best and Worse US Cities to Drive In

I saw this on MSN today. I'm surprised that DC was ranked 10th on the list of worst cities to drive in, but it was "redeemed" in the post-script that mentioned that if you live here, you will exceed the daily 2.5 hours spent in your car!!

Stefano,

I agree I think DC is much worse than LA...

hhmm Boston's fifth? Cool.... I hate driving in the city. It's also full of kids who drive like lunatics in their BMW's (I've just had too many encounters w/ a$$****s in BMWs)

plus the roads are so horrible.. no wonder people buy SUV's here.

Atlant Traffic

I-75 or GA-400 North in Atlanta at 5:00 PM is the worst traffic I have ever seen

Miami, Fl is not on the list???

Wow someone must have gotten a hefty bribe to keep their mouth shut in hopes of luring more tourists.

Holson,

I've been to Boston a few times on business (we have a radar out on the cape) and that is one scarry experience. It was back when the big dig was going on (is it finished yet?) so traffic was more conjested than normal.

One thing that really suprised me is how people are allowed to drive in the broke down lane. Here you are in the slow lane minding your business and BOOM, there's somebody passing you on the right on the shoulder. If you aren't used to it, it can be pretty unnerving.

That happens in DC traffic all the time, too. I try to keep an eye on the shoulder, then sneak out a few feet and block people from getting by. Immature, but effective and fun (within reason)!

Yeah it's not done yet! A friend of mine is now a junior in college and it's lasted since he was in 8th grade or something....

I can see how efficient these people are... last time getting stuck in traffic near the big dig (nothing new...) I saw some people sipping coffee during work. They welded some stuff and went back to chatting...

yeah, it apparently is legal to drive on the breakdown lane after a certain time.

I think driving in NYC isn't as bad. People are more aggressive there but they know how to drive! Nobody seems to end up blocking a whole intersection!@?#!@

sigh.. enough rant. oh... and the salt they put on the roads!

Yea my car always seems to wander that way too when construction or something deletes a lane out, only effective if the person in front of or behind you realize what you're doing and help the cause.

We've got an intersection of three highways here that has been billed as the "third worst intersection" in the country a few times.

I-395, I-95, and I-495 all converge into one spot at the bottom of the beltway. There isn't a day that goes by that then entire area isn't completely jammed!

Now they're "fixing" it with a mult-million dollar improvement that is adding lanes on all the highways. While it will improve things eventually, of course the construction is making things worse in the short run-- a necessary evil, I suppose. Today a large dump truck pulled out of the construction area in the middle of the beltway into the left hand lane. Everyone had to slam on their brakes (I suppose we should have been driving slower...), but what made it worse was us all having to drive over a large piece of metal that had been deposited by some earlier truck.

The worst thought is that they've already realized that the entire project will NOT keep up with the growing population in the area. It's hopeless!!

Howdy All,
I don't care what they say!ˇ Any city over 25,000 people is a pile of crap as far as traffic is concerned.

I live about ten miles from downtown DC. If I want to be somewhere by 9:00, I have to leave no later than 8:00. That's if traffic isn't too bad!

It's exponential: leaving the house five minutes later translates into fifteen minutes more time spent on the road.

the traffic in DC has grown exponentially over the past 10 yrs. i used to be able to get around no problem not too long ago, but now i am pretty intimidated by the confusing traffic patterns. in contrast NYC is a lot easier to get around in once you know the secret backdoors...

Ditto Sometimes we get 3 cars at our 4 way stop and that can be tricky and thats about it, everybody runs it anyway. We have a party store and a post office THATS IT!! While at the party store people commonly ask if the Ferrari is the new Mustang, I tell them yes of course
