Prague, the city

Has anyone been to Prague here?

I just returned from a 5-day trip there (it's in the Czech Republic, former Czechoslovakia), to meet up there with a couple of girls who are travelling around Eastern Europe for a month. Pretty incredible city.

I stayed in a hostel, in a dorm of 36 (yes, 36) people. Didn't sleep too much, oddly, but it didn't matter . It only cost £6 per night and was close enough to the center.

It's a unbelievably beautiful city, someone before I left said it was slightly poor, but, err.. I think they were wrong. I saw more CL's and new A8's than I've seen in England.. Not a single sign of anything even approaching poorness. The 'rough' areas were much nicer than the nice areas of many, many British cities.

Absolutely amazing. When I got back I just wanted to go straight back again.

Anyhow, many pictures taken, check out Pentoman.com to see what I mean.

Oh and I'll explain the 40,000-odd real human skeletons towards the end if anyone asks.

I lived in Prague for a few years in the mid-90's (if you saw the TGI Friday's restaurant on Na Prikope, that was my fault. Sorry.). Along with Krakow and Vienna, it's the most beautiful major city in Central Europe - a great place to live, with daily moments you take for granted there, but would kill for anywhere else, like walking to a restaurant in Mala Strana across the Charles Bridge at night with the Castle lit up, or walking across Old Town Square in the fog. Nice photo from the castle, btw, was the other one taken on Kampa island?

The city recovered pretty quickly from communism, it was already pretty advanced 6-7 years ago. By now it must be approaching the same status as some western European cities in many ways.

Prague, like much of Eastern Europe is very nice because its so very authentic. It's hard to imagine that before WW2, Prague was equal to Berlin, Paris, London, Brussels, Vienna, etc.
Downside of the 'Wende' however are the awfull billboards of McDonald's, Kentucky Fried, Coca Cola and all those other retail chains all around the old city: they really spoil the beautiful art deco architecture. What yet has remained is the incredible cultural life in the city: never encountered such a HUGE music/theatre programme as in Prague. Beer tastes great aswell...

Pentoman: did you notice anything special about the Czech woman?

Did this very walk. I went there for two weeks on business last year. Its a very beautiful city and its even more incredible at night. Prague never got bombed by the Nazis (unlike Warsaw)because Hitler was allowed to waltz in so the city "feels" very old and authentic. By the way that historic detail is a source of tension between the czechs and their neighbours. Lots of expatriates seem to have made Prague their home.

You made 2 good points about Prague... I was there last year and noticed this:

1) McDonalds seems to put their restaurants in the best areas.. right in the best attractions, with the best views. This is the reason why McDonalds makes so much money. They make the majority of money through real-estate.... I bet not many knew that.

2) Yes... Czech women Almost as good as some Polish ladies I have seen

Hmm

My dream was either to live in one of these 4 cities: Leiden, the Netherlands. Prague, the Czech Republic. Budapest, Hungary. Or Krakow, in Poland.

None of these will probably be realized Prague looks beautiful. I'd love to live there.

Living there..driving an old MB taxi during day, spending my earnings in a local cafe and paying for my apartment...

ahh...the Bohemian lifestyle. A dream unfortunately

Actually, outside Prague, in the country, its 'worse'. Had to spend a few days in Brno a couple of years back, for work. (Brno used to be called Austerlitz). The number of gorgeous babes there was really unbelievable. It must be some genetic defect in them people over there. Had a great time. Fella's are all plain ugly, though.

I wondered about the "40,000 human skeleton" reference, and the photos are bizarre. I lived there and never heard of it - what is it, and where is it?

Okay, the bones

The bones are all at an 'Ossuary' - a place for the dead. It's at Kutna Hora, about 70Km from Prague. Apparently, many rich people wanted to be buried there, and during the plague of the middle ages, many many people died. For some reason, initially a half-blind monk started making decorations with the bones of the dead there. In 1870 a Czech woodcarver (Frantisek Rint) completed the decorations in the church. Now the whole chapel is decorated with the bones of around 40,000 people.

You pay a small amount to enter, and a little extra to take photos. It's not a large chapel, but it's definitely worth looking at. It's also nice to look at some of the countryside of the Czech Republic to see what the rest of the country is like.
