Thoughts from a brand new dad...

Paul S, Narwhal, I was thinking of you guys when I wrote this down...

Having a baby makes you learn real quick. Some universal truths...

1) Diapers leak. "Leakproof diaper" is an oxymoron.

2) The baby will soil the diaper as soon as you put it on.

3) The baby will sleep during hours you feel most awake, and stay up during your normal sleep hours.

4) Hospital food is without a doubt worse than airline food. (Are there degrees of oxymoronism?)

5) You'll never eat alone again, ever.

6) If you want to wake the baby, try sitting down to dinner.

7) The baby will grow out of his clothes after wearing them exactly twice.

8) Half the "baby stuff" you have you don't need, that which you need you don't have.

9) Why does every baby outfit come with a different fastener system?

10) There are only three reasons why a baby cries, it's hungry, it needs to be changed, it needs to be burped, and you never figure out which.

And it's all worth it!

Obviously Heidi didn't lay in a good enough supply of baby clothes if they are getting worn twice. Mine on the other hand laid in such a good stock in anticipation that several years later she found a box of baby clothes that had never been worn!

The only way to amortize children's clothes is to have more children.

Thanks for the list Kuan. I showed my wife and got a good chuckle.

I think I'll bookmark this for future reference.

We're about 6 weeks away from the twins arrival date....

You forgot:
1) You will remember what "being alone with a loved one" was like for about a year, after that it's just another Sci-Fi notion.
2) It's OK to have a cell phone on ANYWHERE if the continuation of your DNA is alone with a 16-18 year-old sitter
3) You never stop worrying, you just learn to mhide it better
4) "terrible twos and horrible threes" are an understatement of parenthood.
5) Now you know why kids are so cute ( so at least some of'em survive parental Wrath)
6) Yo remeber the last movie yoy saw (usually just before birth) for the rest of your life (Perfect Storm for us)

For those of you in regions requiring winter and summer wear:

This is MOST frustrating with baby clothes! The kid outgrows the summer wardrobe...and NEVER gets to wear the winter stuff because it's already too SMALL!

And don't bother buying those cute baby shoes...they don't stay on!

For that matter, just buy single shoes (not pairs) until they are about 18 months old. For some reason, they like to pull off that one shoe, so there is that period of time where your child sits around in the stroller with one shoe on and one shoe off all of the time!

Oh yeah...get ready for those ear infections...my daughter was on the "Ear Infection of the Month" club for a couple of years...my wife and I are familiar with every conceivable antibiotic made!

My kids got some sort of pneumococcal (sp?) vaccine and ear infections have been very infrequent. Almost a non-issue. My kids hardly ever took anitbiotics. I even talk about it in the past tense

10) there's actually 5. I used to run down the list with my now 5 year old son and will be doing it again with my 2month old duaghter.
The other 2 are: tired and not feeling well.

But....even after all the *inconvenient nuances* babies have, the love they return more than makes it worth it.

Congratualtions Kuan. That's quite a handsome fella you got there (I saw his pic on the other thread). Looks just like you, right?

Yes, there is no joy in Diaperville at times. But it all goes by so fast. Just like the song says, Turn around and they're two, turn around and they're four.... I turned around and now my daughter is four!

If you're interested, the baby equivalent of mercedesshop can be found at babycenter.com. :p I joined this bulletin board for others who had a child born the same month and year as my daughter. Kind of like finding others with the same make and model. I learned more there than from any book, or any doctor. There are so many "Is that normal?" questions that come up. It can be worse than diagnosing intermittent car problems.

Anyway, good luck, and God Bless!

When my daughter was born, someone asked me a few months later how my life had changed. They were looking for the usual responses concerning lack of sleep, etc. My "usual" response is (and it's really the truth as I see it):

"There is now another person on this world that I would reach into my chest and pull my heart out for."

As a parent, you'll know how I feel.

the tubes did it for us. Before then we get 2 weeks on (ear infection) and 2 weeks off (antibiotic for a week, and then 1 week when the new infection was incubating. It lasted a year. we averaged 3-4 hrs of sleep a night (also, that's when epilepsy started, which made it worse) and about 1 nookie a month. needless to say we slept in shifts ( I would go to bed at 1 am and wake up at 4:30am, wife, who did not work, would go to bed at 9:30, get up at 1am, and then catch about an hour of sleep between 4:30 and 5:30 when I had to start getting ready for work). Yeah, let's have 3 more kids! they're cuuute!
