Fly a Flag, Lose Your House!

And people wondered why I refused to buy a house in a newer neighbourhood with such controls. The misconception is that older neighbourhoods like mine will go to hell thanks to no controls. However, we still have to abide by municipal bylaws. Just not the often ridiculous rule book that these HOA's come up with. My neighbour just happens to have a tall flag pole and is proudly flying the Canadian flag. It's an unusual sight, but not an eyesore.

I'm glad my house doesn't belong to an association.... can't stand homeowner associations and their stifling rules.
On the other hand, why did this guy buy into this neighborhood? They're designed for people who want to live in a vanilla neighborhood. You either live by the democratic rules or don't move in. Just because it's the Americen flag doesn't give the guy a right to flaunt association rules.

Case in point...
Here in Detroit we recently had a case of a guy who was flying a twelve-foot flag on his property. At night during a breeze the flapping caused such a racket that the neighbor couldn't get his sleep in an otherwise quiet neighborhood. He complained. Naturally, the media and "flag wavers" jumped all over the neighbor and how he should be ashamed of being "unpatriotic". Crisesake, this guy just wanted some piece and quiet.
I'm slightly bugged by all the "flag waving" after 9-11. We're not fans rooting for a college team. Patriotism is something personal and our Flag deserves more respect by reserving it for special occasions.

As for the former Marine flying his flag, is there any Constitutional saying that will defend his right to do so? I personally don't see anything wrong with flying a flag in your front yard. One of my neighbors has a large Irish flag thats often out... I haven't heard anyone complain, and it doesn't bother me. I think there is a "flag rule", where you have to take down the flag at night.... if you thats followed, then you shouldn't be bothered by the noises at night. just my 2 cents:p |

To set the record straight...
This guy DID illuminate his 12' flag, otherwise the city would have cited the color code. At least he had that much respect.
