I hadn't until August 30th, 2003.

Saw two people riding them down a sidewalk in a nice part of North Seattle. Fiftyish couple, wearing those el cheapo white Bell helmets that most bicyclists shun for something much sleeker.

The funny thing was, I saw some teenage guy riding one around the VERY next day--in the small Eastern WA town that my parents live in.

Lots of people were goggling at his Segway (which he was riding through a mall parking lot, making a shameless effort to show off) with looks of "wow, that thing is so cool/amazing/etc". All of this made me just need to go heckle him. Which I did, pulling up alongside him in the Grand Cherokee and asking him "So, too lazy to walk here, eh?" and hitting the gas and drowning his reply out in the roar of the Jeep's big Six.

I know I was being an SUV @$$hole, but I don't care. IMHO, those things are one of the worst ways to spend $3500 on personal transportation. What kind of racing bike does $3500 buy these days? Not to mention that $3500 can put someone into a totally decent W123 body car.

Anyone else have any Segway stories?

Saw an NYPD cop in Manhattan on one. Ev erytime he came to a stop people would ask him questions. He wouldve spent less time if he had walked

There's a resort on Oahu that bought Segways for their security and guest services personnel. When being used by "staff" it looks good, but for "civilians" I would have to say that there's a huge dork factor involved, like "Look @ me, I have way too much money, so I don't have to use my legs anymore!"

And then you hit the gas? Well I think if you want to insult someone you should at least give them the courtesy to even the score instead of running off like a sissy.

I think the things look hideous, and are a blight on the landscape that they darken, and a lousy waste of money for the benefit or what you get, and are supremely dorky, and are bought by people merely because they're the "Latest Techie Fad", and because I was just feeling like it that day. Otherwise, I have no reasons.

Yeah, GE bought a bunch of them to "increase management productivity" -- someone crashed one gong over the railroad tracks and they all disappeared.

Stupid idea, sorta on the same scale as using nuclear weapons to dig canals.

I have to lub my tools across huge parking lots all day if I could come up with an acceptable hauling solution for my truck I would have one in second.
