Do we have any Tom Waits fans out there?

Tom Waits is perhaps the most creative composer of the era. In my humble opinion.

they were a hard-drinking lovable bunch.

He quit drinking in the 80's. His early stuff though is arguably his best. He wrote hit music for the eagles and bruce springstein.

I don't know who wrote the song, but I have always gotten a kick out of Warm Beer and Cold Women on his Nighthawks at the Diner album.
