I've often wondered just how neccesary it is. It's a paranoia thing I guess. Worry that some wacko ex-post office employee is going to get your license plate number, and track you down and slash your daughters at night.

Okay, so you have a 500E for sale...and you live in the Long Beach California area based on your plates...probably doing pretty good for yourself...
...lessee, hmmm, nice neighborhood, wonder what other treasures you might have up for grabs that you DIDN'T put up on eBay? Not saying everyone thinks this way, but it just seems like there is too much private information that is easily accessible to not just the general public, but the worldwide public! It's a scary thought actually...

Prominent cars get stolen. Happend to a friend of mine.
Thomas, the guy with whom I'm working on ikonengold.de, had a great 360° pano-vision of his car in the net  Here you see the pano: It is the car on the bottom... One morning it was stolen. With 353 tkm. Right in the middle of Cologne. Kind regards Eberhard

Yeah, the car theft thing. But I wonder if it's any worse than driving around all day with your plate hanging out in the open anyway.

I guess blocking out the plate number is also appropriate when posting pictures of another persons vehicle.

Modern thieves
I'd be more worried about the VIN. I heard nowadays the thieves use the VIN to have a key made at the dealer. No need to break a window. Just wait 'til nightfall, unlock the car, get in, start the car, and drive off! For this reason I have the VIN at the windshield blocked off.

When I do a used car search, I use the VINs on eBay and autotrader to guide me on trim levels and options. For example, there have been a number of claimed LWB S320s with WDBGA32 VINs. Right. It saves me the trouble of verifying by email.

With the VIN it is pretty to get a second set of keys. If you don't have the VIN you have to be more creative.
Some weeks before Thomas car got stolen, someone had broken into and stole his MP3-player. We should have changed the look cylinders at that time. Probably at that time the thieves took care for there privat set of keys... Kind regards Eberhard

OK - granted you guys with the fancy image processing software might be able to pull something out of that (rather embarassing I might add) but the average Joe Schmoe on the Internet isn't going to get any pertinent information about Cinderella, certainly not enough to profile her for theft. After all, she is the low mileage one in the fleet.

I felt the need to shade out a bit more than just the license plate - just to be on the safe side. You can't trust people any more these days.
