MB Classic Car Center - Orange County, CA

Nate and i took a trip to the MB Classic Car Center in Orange County. i thought id share some photos from the place. some of the cars are for sale, some aren't. overall the place was really impressive. the w123 only has 26K miles on it!

enjoy

Very cool. Did they have pricing on some of the cars for sale or was that negotiable? Too bad they're not open on the weekends.

it was unclear which cars were for sale and which weren't.

the w123 wasn't for sale. and i didn't see any prices. i think they should print out a little story for each car that you can read while touring. we had to ask the receptionist about the diff cars. there's a beat up 190E in showroom - and she had no clue why it was there.

Neat place, huh? Went there in April of this year. That 25k mile w123 was the official MB dyno warm-up car for over 20 years. It's rarely seen daylight, and yes, there were evidence of oil leaks on the underside.

I highly recommend you guys visit that place - it's really cool.

Wow very cool! Wish they would build one on the east coast!

I'll give you guys two guess's on the story thats behind that lifted SLK. I know the story behind that car quite well...its been places...

I think any car that is for sale has an amazing price tag! But what a great place to get a perfect example of whatever MB model does it for you. Now here is a queston, say you came to them and said you would be willing to pay top dollar for a new condition 350SD Is there a way for them to deliver such a car?

yes. the lifted slk was written up comprehensively in the mbca magazine. they guy and his girlfriend drove it around the world the long way. i read his book about it.

the capital adventurer or similar name.

i may dig it out to see exactly what it was.

good enough to keep reading. his adventures held me.... his egotism put me off.

I always wondered where the SLK ended up. up untill the last time i was there, everytime they sent me to Montvale for training that oddball car was out back in their parking lot with its trailer attached.

That 600 is awesome! Is the W111 a 220 or a W112 300SE?

The SLK was specially commissioned as an SLK body on top of a G-Wagen platform (I believe) by investor Jim Rogers for a trip around the world a few years ago with his wife (30-ish years younger than him), it's detailed in the book "Adventure Capitalist". Rogers wrote another book, "Investment Biker", about a similar trip he took around the world on BMW motorcycles in the early '90s with his then girlfriend, also about 25 years younger than him. Both are worth reading. Interesting guy - he was George Soros's original partner, retired to invest his own money in the early '70s, owns a mansion on Riverside Drive in NYC and occasionally teaches at Columbia. More recently he got heavily into commodities a couple of years before the recent bull market and started a commodity fund that's done very well. Mostly invests and has a lot of fun, he's on the panel in the Barron's Roundtable issue most years. He also had a trailer in the same color as the SLK that he pulled around with their luggage.

That caR must be a new addition to the Classic Center. I visited about 6 weeks ago and the Rogers SLK wasn't there. They did, however, have a bunch of cars shipped over from the MB museum in Stuttgart that they were preparing just before sending them up to the Pebble Beach councours. I think most of the cars in the back aren't for sale. The back room isn't officially open to the public, but if you show interest you can usually find someone to take you back and answer questions - the people who work there are really into the cars.
