W126 300SE Gas Mileage
On my last tank, I got 20 mpg. Is that OK or a little low. I might have to do a tune up and check the FPR for leaks.

20 just about every time for me. With the 3.46 rear end, it probably wont get much higher. My best is about 23.

I could only dream of 20mpg in the 300SE but I never took it on a really long haul. In comparison, the S420 did 20-21mpg on an SJC-LAX roundtrip in the summer with AC blasting (outside temp gauge showed up to 107F) and cruise set at 85-90mph.

Yes I did. My two loves are LWB and Diesel. The SE, though a grand car in its own right was on the wanting end of both loves
 It was my first real MB (the 450SEL was more of a continuous project). In retrospect it served to ensure that there will always be an MB in my driveway. Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL 83 300SD ... $1100, see cars forum

As for the 560 I'm seeing pretty fair numbers. Average 14.5 for the past 20K miles, in town just about 13mpg and steady highway right at 20mpg, combined fluctuates between 14.5 and 15.5mpg.

Thanks for the info guys. At least now I know 'der panzerwagen' is doing OK. I'll be doing a tune up this week.

Wife's '91 420SEL gets...
..18 to 19 mpg around town, in stop & go, and 20 to 21 on her 15 mile commute, which is about 75% freeway.
That's on PREMIUM, but who cares? It is an S-Class

I get about 22 on the motorway and about 14-15 urban-cycle. Then again I drive fast with random top speed runs to make sure everything is working right!

I have been getting horrible fuel mileage lately. Lousy 26 mpg in LWB 300SDL. This car is supposed to be efficient? Hah!
 I mean, come on. The best I've ever gotten was 32 mpg. That's it! But listen to this! This oil-sucker sometimes gets me as low as 24 mpg! I should just trade in the car, as I can't afford to keep it on the road. I should at least get 40mpg. What an embarrassment.

Oh the 300SE I have?
About 22 mpg in summer. 20 seems normal. If I use this car in the winter, I would be expect around 15 mpg on premium. Ouch.

Has anyone thought about putting a turbo of some sort into a 300SE/L? There's plenty of room in there, plus a few extra ponies wouldn't be all too bad.
Is there anything one can do for around $1000 or less. Would any sort of "enhancement"cause a decrease in MPG?

Installation of a $1000 turbo would probably result in a severly hacked car. Enjoy the car for what it is and spend your time money on upkeep. Do I sound like an old man?
