Spyware/adware.......

Anyone have problems with this crap on your cpu's?

Whenever I reboot, my home page goes to searcv.com.

I ppurchased software to remove it, yet it continues to happen after reboot.

I also purchase a pop blocker that is supposed to block the spyware as well, yet searchv continues to dominate my machine.

Ideas appreciated.

We did a thread on spy ware and pop-ups just a couple weeks ago. May want to search back thru. There was alot of good info there. I learned alot.

Lavasoft adaware 6.0 is free and works wonders. Get it you won't regret it.

Just tried Lava Ware and it removed loads of stuff. Apparently, it reoved things that Spy Sweeper couldn't/didn't.

I tried it at home, next we'll see if it works on the messed up one at the office.

Thanks

I have been having the same typing problems at my workcpu. It is ridiculously slow typing. I actually see the words seconds after I type them.

Thanks

Yeah, sounds like CWS alright. I was seeing words like 20 seconds after i typed them. Do a search on "Cool Wave Shredder" and I'm sure you'll find it. Freebie. Make sure you check for the free updates about once a week and run it at least that often. But that's ALL it will fix, I'd recommend installing another spyware program like Ad Aware 6.

Ad Aware 6 is very good as far as I know. I got tired of trying all the different ones and settled on that one. Do a search, you can find it free (This is the one from Lavasoft).
But I was also having this problem:

* Redirections to CoolWebSearch related pages
* Redirections when mistyping URLs
* Redirections when visiting Google
* Enormous IE slowdowns when typing (especially this)
* IE start page/search page changing on reboot (sounds like this is what your problem relates to, mine did this alot too before CWShredder)
* Sites in the IE Trusted Zone you didn't add
* Popups in Google and Yahoo when searching
* Errors at startup mentioning WIN.INI or IEDLL.EXE
* Unable to change or see certain items in IE Options
* Unable to access IE Options at all

For this problem I downloaded CWShredder (Cool Wave Shredder), and it fixed those problems very well. This is also available free.

Where can I download cw shredder?

Gilly 12-05-2003 09:10 PM

I found it:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

It was on the post that Ted (W126) mentioned. This site FIXED my problem!!!! Go to that site, they explain the whole problem and have the download (CWShredder) to fix it.

Here is a link to the thread Ted mentioned:

Sounds like you have variant 15:

Variant 15: Mupdate - Turning up everywhere

Approx date first sighted: October 13, 2003
Log reference: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=13613
Symptoms: Homepage changing to searchv.com, redirections to runsearch when mistyping URLs, *.masspass.com in the Trusted Zone, hijack returning on a reboot.
Cleverness: 9/10
Manual removal difficulty: Involves some Registry editing and lots of ini file editing.
Identifying lines in HijackThis log:

Go to the previously mentioned site and try digesting most of it, the link to download CWShredder is towards the bottomn in the "Epiloge" section.

Thanks for the help guys. I found CW and removed any known threats from my home cpu.I will be trying it out at my office cpu soon.

Have a great weekend.

BTW, there are also several security patches available from Microsoft that deal specifically with this issue.

Hope that works out for you Plantman, that CWShredder is a real PIA!
It's "Cool Wave Search" that's the PITA, Cool Wave Shredder is the "good guy".

Yup, I see you went through everything at that site, they mention the MS patches. Guess if you're going to play the MS game you should play by the rules and get the updates. I also set mine up to do the auto-updates.

You know, I bet if some good lawyers got together they could make some money from a class-action suit against companies that push spyware. Even if part of a program's EULA mentions something about invading your computer, tracking everything you do and hammering you with idiot advertisements, I bet the suit would be successful.

Well my office cpu is really getting to me. I tried all the aformentioned solutions and it is still working like a dog.

It now keeps going to perfectnav.com and is really annoying.

I think I might just format the hard drive and start over.

Addtionally, this cpu I am on now was going to Perfectnav.com instead of bellsouth.net, which is my homepage.

Is it possible that by default, it is being sent to perfectnav because bellsouth is having problems?

Thanks
