what's with this carpet?

This car is a twin of my SDL, except for 100K miles and reclining rear seats.

What's with the baseball field pattern on the carpet? Is it really like that or was it vacuumed by a groundskeeper?

It is just how the pile brushed up. I am a detailer for a Saturn retailer, and you would not believe how many people complain that their new carpet is "stained" because the pile is brushed wrong. Also, this is a common detailing trick to mask stains and/or discoloration in the carpet.

I was a professional carpet cleaner in a former life. It's common to clean a carpet and leave a nice pattern on the floor. It helps "sell" the cleanliness of the job when the customer inspects your work. Half the time they forget to look for stains because they're so distracted by the "pretty pattern"!
