Unhappy bmw's landshark puts the bite on MB's "monster"

i am sensitive to this issue as i worked for 18 years with a fortune 100 company that was constantly being beaten by its closest competitors ads that were usually received as being far superior. even with virtually unlimited funds for advertising, they just could not seem to compete with effective ads in recent times.

i saw the MB "monster" ad, and thought, well, thats cute.

but i think the bmw "landshark" ad is far and away better!
and hits the target audience perfectly.

i saw a new ad for ford recently, that i thought was very effective. tagline is: quicky breakfast takes your $5 bill, 2 slices for lunch takes your $5 bill; for the same $5 a day, you can be driving a brand new mustang! i wont argue the merits or terms/price of the contract, just that its fine advertising.

any thoughts on MB advertising?

To be honest, I don't see the need to advertise a 470hp $80k car.

I think MB's advertising is terrible. They ran that stupid promotion over the summer showing people with strings tied around their finger. And now the silly "winter dream" promotion. They need to fire their advertising agency and hire somebody else.

The marketplace will dictate whether MB changes its ad campaign or even it's whole corporate philosophy. Since merging with Chrysler, Daimler-Benz has been awash in red ink and I would expect dramatic changes in their operations and product lines to turn things around.

As for their ads . . . they tried to attract younger buyers by going to a more edgy ad campaign over the past two years . . . but what they really needed was . . . www.bmwfilms.com

I didn't like those ads either, but I think they are targeted towards the Greenwich, CT yuppies that buy those cars. The ads that still hold the trophy for getting me most pi$$ed off are the Jaguar ones where the woman/man buys a Jaguar for their spouse. The worst one was the one where the guy gets a model of the Jaguar (and they pronounce them Jag-you-ar) and he's disappointed until he sees the real model. Come on! People should be thankful for what they get for Christmas and that was a damn nice model. The idea that he was disappointed because the gift wasn't good enough is a terrible message. Those ads appeal to the snobbiest of snobs.

that landshark ad is so hilarious... I really love bmw ads, except for some of the 745 ads... too yuppie-ish. As far as mercedes ads go, I loved their G-class ad and their older C230 sports coupe ad, but I don't see them that much. The E55 ad was cool, but I think they could have shown more of what the car can do. Favorite car ad? I love the BMW M5 ad where it shows the supersonic car (the one with two rolls royce engines) do a test run in the desert.

I think the landshark is OK, but the angels and the X5 is the dumbest thing ever concocted, of course soccer moms may like it. I cant imagine anyone else drives that ridiculous thing.

I'd take an X5 over a turbo diesel any day of the week.

at risk of being strung up, VW has a pretty solid ad department. Its got to take some convincing to conjure up an emotion in 30 seconds, and they are pretty good at quickly arriving on target. And Hummer has at least one enjoyable offering with the downhill soap box racer bit. The redhead in their other ad makes the offensiveness of oversized fridge on wheels in a city almost tolerable...

MB had a couple of decent ads a few years ago- seem to remember lots of night sky and some decent music and the then new round headlights. One might have had cactuses and cowboy music? Am I losing it?

Lexus and MB ads today are channel changing material- not nearly as bad as cadicrap's overplayed Oooh yeah Oooh OOh yeah= how likely is it for anyone driving a cadilac to cruise around shrieking zeppelin, especially with junior in the kiddie seat. Horrible. Or Dodge's HEMI-centric ads. ugh.

I'm going to go read a book.

you talking about me? I'd take an X5 4.6is over an ML 320 anyday. Much more power, much better handelling, lower center of gravity, all in all better car hands down. compare it to a turbo diesel? Are you kidding? I'd take one in a second. Given, that's assuming I don't have to pay for it, but I still like them. Just because it's a mercedes board doesn't mean you can't like other cars.

Aye it is indeed

But why compare a V8 to a V6, of course its better, but there is of course the ML55. I said that cause everyone here drives a turbo diesel, and I wasnt serious.
