hard drive video recorder without subscription?
I like the convenience of a HD video recorder so I can watch the few shows I like to watch when it's convenient for me. We don't have cable or satellite so a show listing subscription isn't worth the cost to us. Is there such a device for under $200? Tivo and ReplayTV won't work without a subscription.
Anyone know if the Archos devices have timers? I didn't see it in the specs. Someone said I can build such a device out of a PC. Seems like it'll be easier for me to pay the money. Thanks, Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL |

Cable companies are starting to offer integrated DVR set top boxes. You might want to check this out if you already subscribe to cable.
I'm waiting for Comcast in Dallas to rollout their DVR. From what I hear, for and extra $9.95/mo., you get a set top box that acts as a digital cable HDTV receiver and DVR. I think that's cheaper than TiVO's subscription rate, and you don't have to buy the box.

re: freevo - now that's cool tech! both TIVO and Replay are linux based systems. the real challenge is setting up the guide because you will need to get a guide that is local to you.
re: comcast - i have serious doubts about their ability to deliver technology. they have had digital cable for many years yet it only applies to the premium channels. broadcast TV that they carry is really bad - which makes me suspicious that it is not really digital. in contrast direcTV's broadcast TV channels are digital and crystal clear.

I have TWC's DVR cable box, and it's nice, but quirky, like it forgets to record certain programs, but not others. Given their relationship with advertisers, they don't have the "commercial kill" feature, just 3 levels of FFWD. My cable company has the new HDTV DVRs on order, so that will be the next "free upgrade" to the home theatre system. I heard that Replay got bought out by another company after Sonic Blue and I wonder if that means that TiVo and Replay may not survive the $9.95 per month, no equipment purchase system that cable companies are offering. What happens when your Replay or TiVo units break after the warranty period or you want HDTV recording?
