a sad sunday

Today we said goodbye to a member of our family. Our pet dog beemer, (please no flames here) had to be put down today. It has been a tough day for all of us. we've had him for over 11 years, a year longer than our oldest and its the toughest thing I've ever had to do. The house already feels different without the little bugger underfoot, barking at the neighbours walking by, the coffee cup hitting the counter that sounds like a bark at the door...even having to shovel the roof today seemed a pleasure in comparison to this. Normally I handle this kind of thing with the cool reason of an engineer but the silence here is deafening.

In comparison even shoveling the roof today seemed like fun. (our California members are not going to understand this) At least my wife has the Pats in her office pool....

That bites Mark. Hopefully the kids are taking it well and understand the reasons why.

I feel for ya, man.

I love my dog, Pee Wee, and I dread the day that I might have to do this.

My heart goes out to you. Pets contribute so much to our lives.

I wish you peace with your feelings and hope you feel the love and care you gave your pet echoed during these tougher times.

Sorry for your loss. It's especially hard when you have to make that decision about a pet you love so much. Our yellow lab is 10 1/2. Developed diabetes 3 years ago. Insulin shots twice a day with her food. Due to the diabetes she has developed cataracts and is about 98% blind. She does well here at home. She knows where everything is and gets around the house very well. But taking her anywhere is really hard on her. We took her with us to my daughters college when we dropped her off one day. We could tell that Rosie did not like the uncertainty of not knowing where she was with her blindness. So know we keep her home, and don't rearrange the furniture, so she's pretty happy. The Vet told me when she developed the diabetes, that it would take about 2 years off her life. Her mom was put down at 12. So were facing that decision in the next year or so. As long as she's comfortable, even though she's blind, I can't see putting her down.
I know it will be tough. We got her 6 months after my Dad died which I had a hard time with. My wife said I had to train the nw puppy, which kept my mind off my Dad, so I'm very attached to her.
Again my sympathies.

Dave

I feel for your loss, Mark Not too long ago we had to put a cat down who we’d had for over 15 years. It was devastating.

Sorry for your loss Mark. I had a pet dog, Ceasar, years ago that I received for my 12th birthday. He lived about 13 years, then dissapeared one day. I suppose he knew his time was up and wanted to go by himself. He was my best friend.

Anyone who reads my posts can attest that I am very sensitive to pets. Especially dogs. Last year my beloved BenzE was killed and I felt as if part of me was missing. I still tear up if I think about him for very long. If you love animals you have to have another one. In my case I now have THREE. You will not replace your dog but you can love another one. And take it from me, the sooner the better!! Rescued animals make great pets. At least they have for me anyway.

Mark, I went through this myself a few months ago. I can relate exactly how you feel. I didn't truly sleep for a month - at which time I brought my newest four-legged companion home.

Don't feel bad about feeling grief. In fact, let it out. I know I did.

My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you and your family.

When the time comes and you are ready for a new best friend, look at www.petfinders.org and fill in the search data. He's out there waitng on you.

Mark -- we lost our pet Beagle, who was also 11 years old, on November 12, 2003. It still hurts and I still miss her every day. The hurt lessens with time, but I think it will last forever and will help us to remember her. Maggie was a joy and was an important part of our family. She succumbed to a terrible cancer. We did all we could but in the end she would have suffered terribly, and only lasted a few more days, if we had been selfish enough to try more.

If you had to put Beemer down I assume you did all you could for him and in the end you acted in his best interest and not yours -- Beemer could not have had a better friend.

Very sorry to hear that. I know how ya feel. We had our dog "Freddie" for seventeen years. When he had to be put down, I was so emotional for a couple of months. People would say to me, looks like you lost you best friend, I would tell them - I did. Sorry again.

It's not the tall sails that bring a ship to the port of destination, but the unseen wind.

I know the pain.

I lost "Fergus" (tri-color beagle) on Christmas Day in 1994.

He got run over by a car. Hit and run.

I've had other dogs but have been unable to replace "The Ferg"
