Dream car in the desert
Say you had the choice of spending the day exploring the Nevada desert in/on one of the following
2001 C5 Corvette Convertible 2001 Porsche Boxster S 2002 Harley of choice Which would you choose and why? The reason I ask is because I plan on indulging myself on a spring break trip to Las Vegas and renting one of those 3 vehicles. The prices are roughly similiar, though the Harley would have unlimited miles. Your choice? |

Considering that the dessert is a big, straight, flat place... it seems driving a Porsche would be out of character.
You need big American muscle, and the Harley or Corvette would certainly deliver. I would take a mid size bike with the largest motor possible and enjoy some high speed cruising. EDIT: You don't have many chances in life to drive a sweet bike in the middle of no where. For the "special and unique life experience" factor alone, I would take the Harley. |

The Porsche is out of character, this is true.
There isn't anyone around to hear the HD pipes. The C5 is a bit underrated all around as a sportscar. I would go for the C5. All my friends diss the 'vette. Its image is hairy chested with a medallion, or worse, earlier editions are saddled with the "face-man" a'la A-Team complex. But, having experienced them, I can think of no other car that can do what a 'vette can do for the cost. Not a car I would want to park in my driveway... Actually, the '05 Vette is a car I would like to park in my driveway. |

As for the Porsche being out of its element, I was thinking of perhaps visiting a state park right outside of vegas in the mountains, I'd think that is the Porsche's element... |

Rent the Vette put the top down and crank up the music. Maybe some good rock n' roll. Then put your foot to the floor! That would be awsome, the people who badmouth the C5 usually haven't actually driven one. I would be willing to bet it would beat the Porsche up those mountain roads.

Where do you plan on starting your trip? If you are driving from L.A. to Vegas, it is a 5+/- hours haul. And there is not much in between except Barstow (sp?) for its outlet shops. It would be fun on a Harley, as long as it won't break down and you have experience on long haul bike trip.
Both the Boxster and Vette will be alot of fun. As long as there is no trooper around, you can open them up because some stretch of the road is rather straight and long. I once drove a rented Taurus from LA to Vegas, had it up to 125 mph at one point. Had to back down because the car was getting unstable. You can always rent a Harley when you get to Vegas for the local touring. If you are starting from L.A., do stop by Calico, CA. It is a ghost town turned tourist attractions. They have daily high noon gun fight in the middle of the town. I love the train ride too. Also have lunch at Peggy Sue's diner. It will take you right back in time to the '50's.

I would get an old beat-up 4x4 pickup truck or Jeep, lock the front hubs, and have a blast.
Roads? WE DON'T NEED NO STINKIN' ROADS!!! If you insist on sticking to paved roads, I think I'd go with the 'Vette...make sure it has air conditioning!!! |
