Source code is the programming language of the operating system. Until security flaws have been found in a hap hazard manner, now they can just browse the code, find a flaw and then exploit it, potentially enough too, well use your imagination.

Microsoft has used security through obscurity, but now the code is open to all evil eyes, which is very very bad.

I guess it's the equivalent to every car thief in the world having the master keys to 80% of the cars in the world.

My guess is MS will have to offer XP upgrades free of charge to registered NT/2000 users, because there's no way they can cover all the flaws.

So from here on, DON'T download 'back-up copies' of Win2000 and properbly WinXP too, from the internet. Chances are they have been 'architected' to do things you really don't want to happen on your computer.

if people are stupid enough to open attachments, then they're going to be hacked. end of story. was true then, is true now. i agree, this is a not an issue. stupid people open unknown attachments. stupid people get viruses and lose their data. stupid should hurt.

This is very unlikely to happen IMHO. This could have been done before the source was released.

In all the history of releasing 'back-up' copies to download, I don't know of any which have been redesigned to do something bad. The people that create the backups aren't interested in destroying user's computers or accessing their files, they are interested ONLY in making the software available without giving Microsoft the cash.



More likely, however, would be that people might remove the unique identification ability from Windows software:

Did you know, just for example, that when you load a DVD or CD etc in media player, it contacts a MS database saying what you're watching, when etc, in order to obtain info on that disc (track titles etc.) Fine, until you realise that it also sends a UNIQUE number, so that microsoft can identify you and each and every user, and what they've been watching/listening to/whatever.




I'm no big brother/conspiracy theorist (I hate it) but I've gotta admit, that isn't a good thing, in the very least because it may be used/sold for marketing.

True. Files could have been replaced with malicious code. But now they can re-architect the whole thing!

Not if you (hypothetically speaking) have got your hands on for example the Corporation Edition of WinXP (multiuser licence).
Then it will only tell MS that one of the 1000000 or more users that have -in some way obtained this version, is watching this or that..
And still.. Only if you allow WinXP to do so.
