does someone know the truth behind 30k motors

from japan that are sold in california. sees a little strange that people in japan replace their motors at 30,000 miles.that has been the story i have heard for years. makes no sence, but this story is believed by many. i find it pretty hard to believe.
motors are almost broke in at that milage. they are replaced because of smog laws??? thats the story.
these are for rice burners only

I'm not sure where they come from but there is a salvage yard in my area that sells 30,000 mile motors. I know several peo[le that have bought them and all have been very satisfied. I think all the people I know bought Toyota 22R engines but I've heard they have Nissan and others.

I lived in Japan for many years, and it is true that the Japanese rarely drive their cars for thousands and thousands of miles like we do.

Why?

Every year the car registration fee gets higher and higher, to a point that it is riduculously expensive to drive a used car. Thus, they sell it and buy a new one.

I have never heard of a mileage restriction, like 30,000 miles, but I'm absolutely certain that virtually all cars in Japan don't get even close to 30,000 miles. It is not just because of the high registration fees, but also due to the fact that the roads are so jammed and highways are so few, that there is no possible way to accumulate a lot of miles.

Having said that, even at low miles, they are the hardest kind of miles you can imagine. Very little high speed cruising. Nothing but stop and go traffic and long periods of idling.

Hi

That is a common misconception and well promoted by the auto companies. The yearly tax on an old car is the same as the yearly tax on a new car.

<<<>>>

Not true. Please check used cars on yahoo.co.jp

Somewhat true, however the cars are generally overmaintained.

Are you sure about this?

While I never owned my own car, the company I worked for provided me with one.

I knew over a dozen Japanese people that owned their own cars, and they always mentioned how the yearly registration fees increased every year.

What part of Japan are you living in?

I lived in the Kanto region.

Can you provide a link to whatever page explains the registration laws / mileage restrictions, etc. for used cars in Japan?

Instead of telling me that my information is incorrect, point me to a site that tells the real info.

Until you do so I stand by my opinion.

I can read Kana / Kanji, but I can't write them on my computer so I can't do a search

http://www.micklay.com/services/shaken.php

This is one company providing inspection service.

As I understand it, the Shaken "Inspection System" was introduced as a form of taxation and to provide another source of income to the auto industry.

So every 2 years you take your car to a dealer or an indy and he tells you that you need to replace almost everything. Every 2 years you tell him to replace ONLY what is required by law and you really need to PUSH them to not rip you off. This is really a cash cow for the car companies so they work very hard at making the bill astronomical and they work in tandem with the New Car Salesmen who tell you that your car is worthless and it is a waste of money to repair.
Nonsense!

Aside from all this. Many of the new models are nice, and will not need any repairs for the first 5 years and if you have the cash. Why not?

Hope this helps>

Gary

There are a lot of places that sell those engines here in Oregon I belive that many of them are from comercial vehicles such as taxies, Have know people that bought and installed them you may have to treat them like a long block as the vacuum systems may well be different on some models......

my 3 rotor engine is one of these motors. it supposedly had 47,000km's on it. they actually threw in the airbox with the engine and the filter had 2" of dirt on it. the oil was jet black. other than that its a strong motor.

you do have to be careful because they can be pulled out of wrecks very early and then stored until they become "sellable" so its possible for your 30,000mile engine to have sat in the rain for 10years.

these motors can be great, but you should still look them over if possible, just like any other used engine
