A crazy, crazy art display of flourescent light bulbs - pics attached

Went to this which happens to be in a field near me. A student at my university (Bristol, England) made a display of flourescent tubes in a field under power lines.

They are powered by the field from the lines.

You go there at just before sunset, then as the sun sets the power usage gets higher and the lights start to come on.

Pretty amazing, and you can walk around the lights. Was there for a few hours.

That is cool thanks for sharing. Probably you do that near radio transmitter tower. Put an antenna out and charge you batteries for free, etc.

Not for free if they catch you!

Bak in the 1970's I read an article in "Mother Earth News" (I think....) discussing how to do it and that its been litigated several times, all decisions in the power company's favor (duh-oh!). One example was a set-up of large coils on private property removed from the transmission R.O.W. but near enough to get induced EMF. The power company won, but I don't know what the precedent was, if any.

For you ambulance chasers out there, I wonder if proving there is sufficient energy in transmission line induced EMF to create usable current could be used to argue that there is sufficient energy flux to cause health problems?

Being ignorant of law, medicine, and electrical physics means I can speculate unconstrained by knowledge.

If you are on your private property and can get induced EMF then it should be yours. If power Co does not like it then they should keep their EMF off your property such as sheild it. It is a two way street, if you are injured by high density EMF then by all means sue the pants off the power Co.

I think that you accurately characterized the loser's position in court.

If you draw the electricity that the power company loses and put some of it back in their lines then you can actually charge them for it. If they don;t want to pay you then they have to stop themselves from losing power.

I STRONGLY agree with that!
