MercedesShop Forum rules!
I poseted a question on a Mazda forum (MazdaWorld.org) over a week ago and so far no one responded and there were only ~ 10 people who looked at it. I post a dumb question or a rant on this forum and I get many responses. My be someone here has a mazda or can answer my question.
I have 2001 Mazda Protege 2.0ES automatic. The owner's manual does not say anything about changing the ATF and filter. My question is how often does the ATF needs to be changed and does this have a changable filter? Or do I have to wate for the OBD-II to tell me to change the ATF?

A lot of cars now are using synthetic fluid with a "permanent fill" in the auto transmission. It may be that they do not consider transmission fluid changes necesarry maintenance, much in the way MB does for the 722.6. This is just a presumption though, I do not know for sure.

unusual design
OK, I buy that. My confusion originates from seeing a nice drain plug on the transmission case on the same order as oil drain plug. If it was fill for life why did they put a convenient drain plug on the automatic transmission? On the MB there is no drain plug you have take the whole pan out to drain the ATF and change the filer.
The ATF filter, does this look like it is glued on and does not need to be changed? I could not find the filter from parts vendors on the internet.

Most Japanese cars need to change tranny fluid. Usually about 60K.

If your picture is to scale, I believe what you are pointing out may be a magnet ( that would be stuck to a steel pan ). Most A/T's have a magnet in the pan. I could never figure out why some transmissions have drain plugs. You are supposed to change the filter periodically. Maybe a good idea to have a plug though, as I hate having 7 quarts of transmission fluid running down my arm, everytime I take the pan off on my Chevy pickup.

My "fill for life" MB 722.6 tranny has a drain plug on the pan and drain plug on the torque converter. Filter is, of course, replaceable.

Mazda trannies are goofy. They used a mix of Mazda and Ford trannies, and the Ford units are junk. The Mazda electronic four speeds are decent IF YOU CARE FOR THEM.
Some don't use a filter like we're used to, but a very expensive fine screen. The screen can be cleaned if you service it often enough. Some use a filter. Take the Protege to a good dealer and they'll tell you how your tranny should be serviced and how much it costs. Then, plan on it every 30-40K-miles or so, and you'll get good life out of the tranny. I did this with our 88 626, and our autobox is still ticking along, much to the amazement of the dealer, with most 88's dead long ago...

I called the Mazda dealer for parts and they normally do not stock the automatic transmission filter. It is a special order item ($38). I guess it is not meant to be changed.
Thanks to all the response I got. I will be changing the ATF with Mobil1 ATF at 35K mi interval and will not touch the filter.
