I love these guys, typical pulpit preachers one minute they denounce nation building the next minute who knows

Kerry kid blasts Bush over Haiti

Daily News Wire Services

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Taking a page out of her father's campaign playbook, John Kerry's youngest daughter yesterday criticized the Bush administration for its handling of the crisis in Haiti.

"I believe this administration just helped overthrow, basically overthrow, a democratically elected president," Vanessa Kerry, 27, said during a campaign stop at Stony Brook University of the ouster of Jean-Bertrand Aristide. "We basically, in our silence, allowed him to be deposed."

At a debate Sunday among Democratic presidential candidates in New York City, John Kerry said Bush's actions were "late, as usual." Sen. John Edwards, his chief rival, agreed.

Kerry's daughter, a third-year Harvard medical student, said she is taking time off from school to work on her father's campaign. She fielded questions from about two dozen students.

A poll out yesterday showed Sen. Kerry with a large lead on Edwards in New York's primary, one of 10 primaries set for today nationwide.

The poll from Marist College's Institute for Public Opinion had Kerry leading Edwards 69 percent to 15 percent, among likely Democratic primary voters. The Rev. Al Sharpton was at 5 percent and Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich was at 2 percent.

As for medmech's subject line, is the Haiti situation really a nation-building issue? Iraq is a nation-building exercise because there never was an imminent threat. By comparison, the Haiti situation was about as imminent as you can get. For better or worse, we had a part in getting Aristide elected, and then we sat back and watched the rebels throw him out. Didn't we? (Some say that we actually removed Aristide against his will. That theory seems far fetched to me.)

I don't know the facts well enough to judge the fairness of Kerry's line about Bush's actions being "late, as usual", but it seems like there is room for criticism of Bush's Haiti policy.

Regardless of whether the "late as usual" line fairly applies to Haiti, it is a good line to describe the cluelessness of Bush/Cheney/Rice/Wolfowitz/ et al. Other then their swift action against the Taliban, tell me a single issue on which that team of geniuses has been anywhere close to right.

Haiti poses an "imminent threat"? Are you SERIOUS? Haiti is about as threatening to us as.....a bowl of yogurt!

Involvement in Haiti would be NOTHING more than charitable nation-building.

Of course Haiti is not a threat to the United States. What was imminent in Haiti was mob rule.

medmech's point, as I understood it, was that Kerry and others were being inconsistent by criticizing Bush's nation building efforts in the Middle East and then criticizing his failure to act in Haiti. My point is that those positions are not inconsistent. For one thing, I don't think that Kerry's criticism of Bush's Middle East effort focuses on the nation building aspect. His criticism is of the dishonesty and recklessness that Bush has shown in relation to Iraq.

As for whether we should have acted sooner in Haiti, it seems to me that we have a stake in the stability of democratically elected governments in neighboring countries. We also have a stake in preventing a humanitarian crisis if we can, especially when it is happening next door. It is fair to ask why Bush did not act sooner.

And that is exactly what worries me about this election. People are only concerned about getting Bush out. Period. They'll vote for whoever is available. Does he have a pulse? Vote 'em in!!
Can you say Clinton(all over again)?
But we've been down this path already. So I'll give it a rest.

So it's not the corrupt actions of Bush/Cheney that bring dishonor on our country, it is the people who point out the corruption. Instead of trying to protect his concept of marriage with his proposed Constitutional amendment, maybe Bush should focus on the First Amendment. We could change it to allow all speech except that which makes our country look bad.

What we have is a veryveryveryveryvery vocal opposition that likely makes up about 2% of the population. Even with Bush not getting as much air time he still holds a lead in most poll's not by much but it's expected with the Dem. primary going on.

Sooner or later the people blabbing this BS are going to have to give answers instead of lip service.
