America's 5 Worst Highways

As reported today on MSN

1. Interstate 5, between Los Angeles and San Diego
2. Florida Turnpike, between Orlando and Miami.
3. I-90, between Madison, Wis., and Chicago
4. New Jersey Turnpike, between the Delaware Memorial Bridge and New York
5. I-45, between Dallas and Houston.

I would have thought that I-35 between Dallas and San Antonio would have at least recieved honorable mention

Wonder what criteria they used to rate them? I find I-35 from Dallas Southbound much more miserable than I-45 Southbound. Tons 'o high speed, agressive traffic on I-35. I-45 is relaxed in comparison.

Maybe it's just because if you drive I-45 you end up in Houston

Worst how? Weather, scenery, pavement, traffic, ugliest cars and trucks? What's the criteria?

I will curb my urge to cut and paste - and just place the link to the article which is subjective.
5 Worst

jcyuhn - I agree with 45 used to take it NBND from Houston then cut over to I-35 South of Waco

The NJ Turnpike only gets hairy from Exit 7 upward. From exit 11 and higher, people drive like there is no tomorrow, especially the Jersey and NY drivers. Below exit 7, it's pretty normal.

After driving the Bay Area freeways for so many years, I saw the 35 between Dallas and San Antonio as a very pleasant drive. There was traffic, but not all that much (by my standards), the road was reasonably smooth, and...well, the only real complaints I had were that the heat was insane (the a/c could barely keep up with it) and that the tape player in the car didn't work.

Having been on it exactly once, I have to agree on the New Jersey Turnpike...me, my mom, and my grandmother did a cross-country trip about 10 years ago, and we still talk about that roadway as being the low point of the trip...

He forgot to mention the 405 in L.A. or just about any of the freeways in the Bay Area. Around here, in rush hour, a 15 minute drive typically turns into a 2 hour drive.

I-95 in CT should have gotten honorable mention at least Why am I paying so much for tax's and still have to drive threw a misrable construction zone, that they call a highway is beyond me.

I read somewhere (that means it's unsubstantiated) that our section of I-35 here in Austin between Buda and Round Rock, TX (about 50something miles) has the dubious honor of having the highest fatality rate on any stretch of Interstate in the country.

I have to agree with you. Last year we visited Mystic. The place was nice but parts of I-95 is like Jersey I-95

Good thing I didn't know that a year ago last July!

Is that 75? I love driving in Michigan (go up to visit every so often) except during rush hour. The speed limit's 70, so most people go at about 75-80. That addresses one of the most important things for keeping highways uncongested; get the people to where they're going faster, and you won't have as many people on the road at any given time.

I-90 going North between Madison and Eau Claire gets real bad in the winter. Some of those long downhill sections hardly see any sunlight at all. Expect to see many trucks and cars off the road when it snows.
