Scooter ignition tumbler

my friend has a scooter that he lost the keys to. we decided to work on it this spring break. i was wondering what would be a way to take apart the ignition tumbler so we can start it with a screw driver. could i drill it out? what tools would u go about doing this job? i have no clue what brand scooter it is, but we know. any suggestions appreciated

What brand scooter is it? The best thing to do is to remove the assembly properly and then replace the scooter with a push button ignition switch. That is what we did for our fleet of scooters after too many of our customers were losing keys when they rented scooters. Make sure you get a switch that is properly rated for your electrical system. Is yours a gas powered or electric?

Here is a link for some free online manuals. I have bought a few things from Rabbit and they are reptuable to deal with.

I restored this Vespa 150 Sprint about 6 years ago, and I was in the same situation. It found it in a motorcycle junkyard where it had been, on its side, for 21 years. I took the bike to a locksmith, and within 10 minutes I had both keys. Yes both. There was a master that opened the side box and turned the ignition on and a valet key that only opened the sidebox. The locksmith made the keys from blanks by putting them in and turning them side to side and then looking at the blank for marks. It was amazing, and only cost $50.

Nice!!! I have 2 Vespas in my fleet, nothing as nice as yours though. The people that rent them from us, trash them.

thanks for the replies.

the scooter does not have a title or keys. we are gonna drive it around the neighbor hood and do some burnout and donuts. it was left behind and so we need to do something with it. plus we are bored.

taking it to the locksmith is not an option since it would cost $50 more than we are willing to pay (nothing).

i was thinking of a titanium drill bit? or should i get some bits for my rotary tool?

i still have no idea what type it is, but i know its a vespa type scooter (might be a honda?) after we have fun with it we might decide to sell it for a couple hundred.
