Post Howard Stern, decency and all that jazz...

Haven't seen anybody discussing this so...

Stern has been in the news lately for getting kicked off the air for being indecent. I have listened to his show on and off when he was played here and sure, he might have been a bit abrasive but not really sure if it ever was indecent. Now some of the TV shows maybe...Are all of these actions consequences of JJ boobelitious behavior?

It sure seemed like Oprah was pretty bad last week with her girl talk show, and what the heck was up with Asscroft and the statue of justice (a while ago)...hmm?

Just looking forward to your guys' comments and to centralize this thing, do we really need the govt. to tell us what we may or may not listen/watch/attend? Are we not capable of switching the "channel" for ourselves?

I voted "maybe" because there are some things that the public just doesn't need to know about. Say, bomb-making techniques or kiddie porn.

I've heard Stern and I think he's funny, obnoxious, obscene, gross, and funny. Okay I said funny twice. Maybe he's twice as funny as he is vulgar. I wish there was a way we could filter this stuff so perverted vulgar adults like me could listen but could be squelched for more righteous folks and kids. There's no magic solution. I also don't care for the presence of music that glorifies violence, denigrates women, and advocates murdering police.

In that case, I wish that artists would self-censor a bit so as not to encourage people to bad behavior.

But at the same time, I think having morality police is a ludicrous undertaking in an open society.

In other words, there is no perfect solution. This latest wave of moralism will reach a crest and people will find it more obnoxious than they find Stern.

Then Stern will be re-discovered like Lenny Bruce was and he will have some weird cult following, then everybody will drink the Koolaid and wait for the spaceship.

But why is Stern the lightning rod on this? Is he just convinient? or "we" gotta get somebody especially since JJ incident?

I agree with you on self-censorship but, knowing a few artists as I do, that seems anti-creative (raw/pure art); allthough in Europe they sure seem under more "control" on stuff like this and/or don't bend out of shape about every little thing. Maybe those people just think before they speak..??? or is it that Puritan/thug thing here?

Yah, what's up with that? It alway amazes me how the media disusses where the terrorist could strike or how. We don't need to give them or any other crazies any ideas. Or how security issues are discussed in public forum. I understand awerness and constructive idea seeking but some of those things probably ought to be somewhat out of public's view. I highly doubt that security shortcomings at an airport are on the front pages of newspapers in Tel Aviv, Paris, Rome or Berlin.

but it's not ok for Stern to make fun of stuff.

It's just more hypocrisy.

So many Americans pretend to love "freedom", and many may actually believe that they do, but they cringe when you speak of the responsibilities and realities that come with true freedom.

Freedom means more than just being able to choose whether you eat at McDonald's or Burger King....

It also means doing your own parenting....If you TRULY want freedom, then you don't demand that entertainment be filtered and spoon-fed to the rest of us just because you can't be bothered to monitor what your kids watch and listen to.

What if you don't have kids, but you're still offended by the likes of Howard Stern, or Janet Jackson's boob? ....Well, guess what....You're an adult, and you have a very easy and highly effective option at your disposal: Shut up and change the channel.

People REALLY need to grow up and realize what freedom and freedom of speech really mean, and deal with it.

Mike

Wow Mike. So true. You are right, most people don't understand that freedom has reponsibilities. Paretnig etc..definately as well as voting-jury duty! Not just sacrifice of lives on foreigh soil. Part of freedom and all the choices it comes with is actually making those choices (use the damn clicker will ya!) Self-determination? Why do we need the gov. to make such peronal and individual decisions for us? Doesn't the gov have better uses or more important duties.

The "not me" attitude transcends here everywalk of life. We have seen many examples of it from the top down recently. Allthough it seems the further you get into more nature (less concrete) based communities the nicer the people are and overall more harmonious. But, I just don't see responsibility being "in" anytime soon; that's what we have all these lawyers and insurance companies for. Seems that kids also enjoy a game called dodge ball - hmm? Dumb on down and numb on down, it's all good. Get your prooooozac here!

That's the truth! You have a choice if you don't like what you see or listen to. Change the channel or just turn it off. When I don't like what Stern is talking about I simply find something else on the dial that I can listen to in the meantime. The problem is that there are those who would like to make those decisions for you. They're a very small minority but they are making it sound that the majority is behind them. It's too bad because of them we're going to run out of choices to choose from.
