As for dollar figures, you'll have speak to folks with hands-on experience. From what you've described, I think sub-$1k is a given, but you'll need to determine which areas require replacement parts, as well as sweat equity. Then ask the experts whether the parts are still available, and at an affordable price.

I believe member DieselPower has an older Ponton he's restoring--ask him about it.

Wait till the dude is fully happy and stoned up, and then flash five Benjamins in his face. Don't pay more than $800 (actually its still a steal at $1K).

$2k paintjob? Whatever for? Its a clunker. Half the fun is the "cool-ness" factor in driving a Pontoon that still works fine. The objective is not to truly restore it, unless you really want a show car (read: big bucks).

Just make sure that the engine is still decent, especially if its a gas engine. The diesel versions are as strong as locomotive engines, ie, last forever. Check that the transmission is still alright, because you don't want to have to fix that crap.

Yes, your wife will definitely kill you (making reference to the masturbation does not cause prostate cancer thread).

The roots of my love for the marque reside with the pontons. My dad had 2 180's. The first one saved his life when he was broad sided one day. Used to run them flat out (85 MPH) for hours on end. Our family of 6 took a cross country camping trip in one. Wonderful memories of the car. I love em. Real Mercedes all the way. I had a 59 220SE that I also drove across the country during college. Smooth and fairly fast out on the road.
