the foundations of modern sexuality/Alfred Kinsey

In the wake of all this gay bishop and gay marriage controversy I have recently been reading articles about Alfred Kinsey. I didnt realize how much his research has shaped our western views of sexuality.
But what I'm learning about Kinsey is very disturbing.
I knew the widely bantered statistic from the kinsey report "that 10% of the population is gay' Is erroneous. The true figure is more like somewhere between less than 1% to 2%. I have found on another forum that if you bring up this subject you quickly get labeled a homophobe. If you push the point you get banned.
It seems like the gay marriage issue is a search for some sort of morality. But what if a persons descision to be homosexual is largely based on the kinsey report as so many gays have done.

You wont get banned, you'll just have a peculiar guy following you talking ugly. You know, like those muttering homeless wackos in a bus station.

Give'm a bath and a bus ticket to some other place and they're okay.

No not kidding the modern view now seems to be that gay is a lifestyle choice. That is what is being taught in schools as well

this all can be traced to the kinsey report which advocates having no morals
I Agree, for me and most hetrosexuals I know being hetrosexual is not a choice but a fact of life.

Are you saying that people are turning gay to support Kinsey's numbers? While I'm sure Dr. Kinsey has a following I never imagined it was that dedicated.

Talk about taking one for the team

BING BING BING

and the BS meter pegs at ten

eight paragraphs into your first article we find this gem

"Kinsey reported the use of more than 300 children in sex experiments. Boys as young as two months old were manipulated manually and orally for as long as 24 hours, by self-avowed pedophiles to achieve what Kinsey researchers described as "orgasms."

Now I haven't read the report and sure may be wrong on this one but I'm calling BS

And the hits keep coming

Another of Kinsey's apparent influences was the occultist Aleister Crowley, “the Great Beast,” known in the press as “the wickedest man alive.”

and it's the trifecta, three articles three nutjobs

The disclosure that Kinsey was a homosexual can scarcely be a surprising one, given the nature of his utopian vision. But he was, as well, a voyeur, an exhibitionist, and a sadomasochist, descending at times in his masochistic moods into outright lunacy, thrusting the bristled end of a toothbrush deep into his urethra and pulling with force on a rope tied around his scrotum; on at least one occasion he noosed his scrotum in this way, looped the free end of the rope across an overhead pipe and wrapped it around one of his hands, and then, gripping the rope tightly, stepped off a chair, suspending himself in midair for a period that seems to have gone unrecorded, and which, incredibly, left him in one piece, albeit hospitalized

Dude. You can't be serious. Stop in any gay bar or party catering to the under 30 crowd and see if anybody in the room can even tell you who the h$ll Kinsey is. The dates of most every study cited range from the early 40s to the early 70s. I don't think they are even relevant. Folks is folks is folks. The world would be a pretty boring place if everybody was exactly the same and had the same inclinations. As my dad used to tell us, "That's why Baskin & Robbins has 31 flavors."

You mean you haven't done that?

You may or may not like Kinsey and his findings but a lot of them have opened our eyes to sexuality and that's probably why we have so many freaks in this world.

Look...Its real simple.

You are either female or male. Your natural goal in life is to reproduce your species. You cannot have two ends that are both male or female. There is no connection. Two can't become one. There is no unity!

The Creator made us like this, and that is how normal people act! Of course you have guys and gals who want to pull a seahorse maneuver and become the opposite sex with an operation. Society is arse-backwards in this day and age.

you are either female or male.

do you suppose this proceeds from the chromosomes x and y? what of conflicted chromosomed individuals ala Jamie Lee Curtis? which is she? er, he?

I think it is a bit simple to state that your natural goal in life is to reproduce. for 'lesser' creatures who suffer high infant/child mortality rates such as flies, mice, and rabbits, a high quantity of offspring is the only way in which to ensure the bloodline will continue. This is, of course, supposing some intentionality to that end which I'd doubt.

For humans, I can grant you the biological goal is to perpetuate the genes inside us. We've got some mighty interesting adeptations due to the size and abilities granted by our massive brains. No more head to toe hair (for most of us..), because we used our brain and figgured out clothes. No more 18 year life span, because we discovered shelter and medicine and cleanliness.

With all of the STDs out there, one could make a compelling case that homosexuals actually have a greater evolutionary advantage due to the lack of sex required to have a child. That, no more mars/venus books to confuse us, better fashion.. geez, let's all be gay! Our brains and our wits, not our loins, are our most evolved devices.

In any case, everyone is entitled to their opinion. However, some opinions are more reasonable than others. Reasonable opinons are those that have been challenged and hold up to scrutiny.

Why should it matter to anyone if gays are 'born that way' or 'choose to be that way'? This question is borne of the distaste for homosexual behavior, an apology for it, and an 'out' for the poor homos who can't help it. Dont give an answer with God in it unless it sounds something like "God created man in his image". Are we now the judges of what fits in God's image? a little arrogant I think. If there is a God at all, and He is the creator, and the creator created everything, then homosexuals are just another part of the great plan. other God related answers are likely to revert back to the Dr. Laura thread.

Uh-oh. Every time we start this subject somebody complains and it gets shut down. Not that sexuality is distasteful per se, but we always push the envelope on collateral questions.

I wonder how long it will be until we get there this time?

djugurba, I think the whole orientation/heritability/free-will thing is absolutely fascinating. From a strictly biological perspective, every combination is out there in some or other species. See, evolution loves sex. Biological success is measured in numbers of offspring/individual. Nothing else matters. That being the case, evolution has decreed that all life be fruitful and multiply, it doesn't give a flip for live long and prosper.

So I think if we view humans as just another creature in the beastiary, there's nothing inherently wrong with folks shuffling the deck and cutting it any way we want. Just keep them babies coming. Now in this happy pile of fornication, some folks are going to have greater success raising children to reproductive adulthood. If that trait that enhances fecundity is heritable, eventully that trait will spread through the population as offspring carrying the trait reproduce at a greater rate than others.

A reasonable question given the supreme importance of reproduction in biological systems, how do we explain a fairly constant proportion of non-strict heterosexuality?
