now, that's more like it - Gadhafi

http://apnews.excite.com/article/20040325/D81HGEBO0.html

Now that's pretty good news considering all of the other things going on around the world. I am still sceptical but happy to see some progress from this rogue.

Ol' Sammy's Bin Ladels ?

Just kiddin'. I believe there are many factors to this and one of them being the above and the sanctions and isolation prob had something to do with it too. Gadhafi ain't stupid just has acted so for 20 some years. He is also noticing the fundementalist fervor breaking out all around him and is just trying to save his own skin. I really doubt that things will get a while lot better for his peeps. We shall see though.

Let's just hope that Nasser and Kim, amongst many others, take that route too. No WMDs there but Castro would do himself some good if he was taking notes right now too. Hey, money$ make everything all better. No?

keep this to yourself, but it just may have had something to do with what happened to Iraq.

I suppose it is just coincidence that Shell and BAE Systems (weapons manufacturers) sign a deal on the same day. Of course no-one would sell their principles for oil/money. I find it a little disturbing also that the UK will 'help train the Libyan army'.

All sounds like Iraq of 20 or so years ago. Or am I just not pragmatic enough?

I agree with you JJL- another copy of the Saddam routine- play by our rules and we can all benefit, step out of line and we drop a few bombs your way to 'remind' you to keep playing nice.

Seeing Blair ass-kissing with Gadafi makes me cringe though- if he hadn't been 'persuaded' to give up his WMD's then Blair and Bush would no-doubt have been hailing him a tyrant and a terrorist by now. Still, we can't complain if we get to exploit their oil and sell them some more weapons. Keeps people in jobs back home and everyone's smiling.

Btw: any sightings of Elvis 'round your way yet?

The glass is half empty
or
The glass is half full

I prefer the glass is half full. I'm not yet become all that cynical. I have hopes that some of what goes on in the world isn't all bad news. I think it's just that the bad news is what gets reported the most.

Maybe I have my head in the sand though.

rick - yeah I hope your're right. But just seeing that sanctimonious ass TB shaking El-Farto Gadaffi's hand after all the ranting about 'sponsoring terrorism' gives me the heebie-jeebies. The guy is hypocrisy on a stick.

chaz, Elvis only appears here once every century when Brigadoon comes to life, surely you know that.

jjl, your view is an honest way of looking at it but I think, incomplete.

Its easy to be friendly and conciliatory in victory. Despite what my brother Americans wish to believe, I think it was the UK that carried the ball on this one. We just played the loutish "bad-cop" to the UK and Blair's good-cop.

"Honestly Muammar, I know you're trying hard to work with us. The whole world is with you on this effort. But that dim bulb Bush is absolutely fixated on this WMD thing."

"Tony, I have tried everything to mollify those guys and they still are generating rumors that I may be next. Next? They want my oil! What can I do to get that maniac off my butt?"

"You've got to keep it simple, Mu. That's what he understands. He's not like ol' Jacques who will swoon when you slip him the tongue. Dubyah's a regular six-gun cowboy. How about considering some overt, public gesture of your sincerity?"

etc.

There's an old saying: "keep your friends close, and keep your enemies closer". It will take years for me to believe that the spots on this leopard have really changed. Still, one can be hopeful, I suppose... The only I know for certain is that Gadaffi (is that the proper spelling these days?) is older and wiser than he once was.
