wow- I'd be sh**ing myself I think.

My father was a Chief Engineer on merchant ships for 40+ years, but I never got to ask him if he saw any waves like that.

Good to see the Scottish built ship surviving a good beating!

When Thing One was in the Coast Guard, he made a trip one fall across the Gulf of Alaska from Bellingham to Kodiak in CGC Storis where he videotaped 45'-55' following seas cresting just off the bridge wings.

When I saw those videos I asked if he was ever scared. He replied, "Naaa, that 'ol girl had seen lots worse than what was going on that day and brought everyone home safe."

The leader of my old Scout unit was telling us a story about what had happened on his old Scout boat, which was a 125' twin-screw that was a Coast Guard cutter during Prohibition. I think the boat was up around Alaska when a wave hit her so hard that she rolled over something like 70° (I don't remember the exact number). Two people died, and according to him, had the boat rolled over another 5 degrees, she would have capsized.

Heck, the boat that my old unit has took quite a beating when she was cruised up from Oxnard to the Bay Area. They ran into a storm north of Point Conception, and they alternated between having green water over the top of the wheelhouse (and spray over the top of the mast) and having the screws completely out of the water. IIRC this torture lasted over 20 hours and only two people onboard didn't get seasick. This was an 82' former Coast Guard cutter, BTW.

This is the 82'

and this is the old 125'

I don't think my current Scout boat could even dream of handling weather like that...I wanna bigger boat

A basic rule of river canoeing is never lean upstream if you encounter an obstacle. This tugboat captain failed to follow the rule:

Kerry, that is some of the most amazing footage I've ever seen! Notice the deckhands on board the barge. I shudder to imagine what would've happened to them if they'd been at their usual posts back on the tug during this episode. I wonder where the engineer or mate were situated?

Warden,
The CG's 82' WPBs were known for their ability to roll, roll, roll....

FWIW, here's my pages on M/V Cahaba's trip under the Rooster bridge. http://www.onr.com/user/rleo/More/towboat.htm

When my dad sent me a link to these pictures a couple of years ago, I knew there had to be a story so, I called the Demopolis Democratic-Reporter and asked if they knew anything about it. There was a lot of info which I transcribed into the text on my pages; ultimately it all landed in an article in Professional Mariner magazine.

BTW these pics made quite a stir on the net and at one point my site had about 36,000 hits/day.

Believe me, I know that *lol* Their service nickname was "Vomit Comet". I wasn't on the cruise from L.A. up here, but I did help cruise that boat from San Francisco to Santa Cruz last year (about a 12 hour cruise, with 9 of those hours along the coast). We hit some fairly heavy seas going out, and she was rockin' and rollin' pretty good for a while (I think 25° to 30° each way, as well as pitching a bit). A couple of people got sick, but most of us actually kept our lunches.
