Mini-railway vandals fear after accident

The operator of a miniature railway in the grounds of a Shropshire stately home believes vandals may have caused a Bank Holiday derailment in which a woman passenger was injured.

Bruce Whalley said that a stick or a stone could have been laid on the track at Weston Park which led to a carriage tipping over on its side.

A woman passenger suffered minor leg injuries when the miniature train was derailed during the Midlands Festival of Transport event on Monday which was attended by more than 6,000 people.

"We are looking into the cause of the accident and why the carriage should tip on to its side and it is possible that items were placed on the track.

"The train had completed at least 15 previous trips around the track on the day without any problems.

"On this particular stretch of the track the train would not have been travelling very fast and the speed would have been about 6mph," he said.

"The driver is very experienced and would know that the section of line was a restricted speed limit," he said.

Mr Whalley said there did not appear to have been any obvious mechanical fault and an independent engineer had been called in to inspect the track where the accident happened.

He said that the Health & Safety Executive had been informed and the railway would not re-open until all safety checks had been completed. The injured woman was treated at Telford's Princess Royal Hospital.
