B17 crash in Van Nuys possibly??
Heard this briefly on the nightly news. Anyone out there have any details or a link to detail (local news station or something?) It MAY have been in Santa Maria. I think it may have been the Collings Foundations "909". Not sure. Did a wheels up landing, or the gear may have collapsed on landing. I didn't catch what wasa being said. But it looked gear-up on a runway.

Thanks for the link, that's better than nothing. I get lots of Warbird magazines, so I suppose eventually I'll get more detailed info. I'm pretty sure it's 909. They'll get it flying again I'm sure, these things happened even in wartime and they fixed them, course they had better access to parts! If they knew that was going to happen they would have landed on the grass!

The plane in question was Aluminum Overcast, and had been working its way up the coast on tour.
She was scheduled to be at Watsonville 1 week before the Memorial day Fly-in and airshow.

That's right, it was not the Nine-O-Nine. Collings Foundation has a note on this accident on their website:
http://www.collingsfoundation.org/menu.htm I flew in the Nine O Nine a few years back with a visiting Brit friend - what a thrill. CF is a great organization, well worth a donation to.

I used to live near Van Nuys. (Was born in the Van Nuys hospital)
Used to see all kinds of strange planes fly over the house. Anyone remember the "Guppy"? It was a regular in the 60's.

Whenever there is an air show on the west coast, these two planes , the 909 and Liberator, always take a few laps around the Los Angeles basin. Their sound is distinctive. Always worth it to whip out the binoculars.
Never do I not get choked up when I see them. glenmore 1991 300CE 1990 LS400 |

RickG,
The Guppy was a modification of the Boeing Stratocruiser, which was a spinoff of the KC-97 tanker, which in itself was based on the B-29 Superfortress bomber of WWII fame. Lots of info is available in recent past issues of Airpower magazine, available in back issue. THey had a great 3-issue spread on the Stratocruiser showing lots of assembly pictures.

I was always amazed those things flew. Kind of the bumble-bee of airplanes. They'd come right over our house on take-off, and looked like they were going to fall out of the air Amazing engineering!

Two years ago, I had the honor to receive a 20 min ride in the nose of the Galveston, Texas' Lone Star Flight Museum B-17, "Thunderbird"
It was a horribly hazy day and we took off to the southeast out over the Gulf of Mexico. It wasn't hard to imagine we were heading to the European continent sometime in 1943. Throughout the ride, I couldn't help thinking about just how thin the sheet metal was and how big Me109s and Fw190s would have looked outside those windows.

i thought for sure it was gonna be a CAF bird.
somebody is (or was) bringing a 17 to atlanta in the near future for a show and is selling rides for approx $400. i was actually thinking pretty hard about it. i been to see them several times and have been inside and all, but wonder about how long the opp to ride will continue. the only thing i would want to ride more would be a 2 seater mustang. i lost an uncle in a B-24 in the big one. i thought you might enjoy this blend of old and new. |

Howdy Rick,
Saw a Guppy parked at the Santa Barbara Airport around 1970. Strange bird.
