That's not just a Jeep, it's a CJ. My '83 CJ7 has 202,000 miles and still works hard. It is amazing what it will do and where it will go.

Older CJ's are the W123's of the 4x4 world. Simple, tough, and just plain cool in many ways...

I'd still take a Cornbinder over a CJ, but I'd take a CJ over a Hummer any day of the week.

Actually they have an advantage as the overall angle front to rear is far less.

And jeeps have two piece axles, not really soild, but I think you meant vs. independant front susp. anyway.

One advantage the first jeep pictured has is that the axles are sprung over (simple mod aften done to crawlers), and that suspension setup is not stock. A lot of this is about the setup and the weight of the vehicles. A Jeep Grand Wagoneer goes through the mud like a dinosaur through a tar pit. Some people run big tires (33's and 35's) on Jeeps, but they won't fit into the wheel well on a ramp or a trail and will take a foot away from your suspension articulation. The Hummer has to have the big tires for it's weight.

Yep! My first diesel was an '80 Scout II. Had a 101ho Nissan turbo diesel...I really miss that truck

Yup. that's what i ment. I saw a vid somewhere where the H2 busted it's tie rods or something there and the front wheels went in opposite directions. The original Hummer seems way more tough though.

I love old CJs and Scouts. I'm sure the CJ beat the Hummer on the ramp thing, but I've seen Hummers do other things I doubt a CJ could do. I saw one drive up and over a 4+ foot wall of mud and continue to drive on the flat surface 4+ feet over its starting point while it was driving in what looked like a bulldozed out little crevass. It was pretty amazing, but I don't know, maybe a CJ could do that too.
