rode 40 miles this AM (plus tall deer and snake tales)

i managed to get in 40 miles on the bike this AM before the blistering heat arrived.

had one good scare: trying to push a bigger cog on a long slightly downhill grade, pushing close to 25-MPH with the head buried only watching the middle stripe, i hear a loud "CRACK" off to the left side. thinking it was either a tree or the deliverance boys, i look up to see a good size buck coming off the hill directly at me as he was crossing the trail. there was that brief moment where we both went left and then right, and then he gave the best OJ shoulder fake ive ever seen before bolting back left and crossed the trail and VERY quickly vanished into thick brush.

crossed over a 150ft high old RR trestle, went thru a very long tunnel, up to the lake (no swimming until this WE!) and turned it around.

on the way back i saw a girl jogging that jumped slighty less than i probably would have when she ran up on a fairly large snake crossing the path. she yelled SNAKE! and darted off quickly. i darted off even quicker. im not fond of the creepy crawlers.

also ran into a family riding a 3-seater stretch pulling a trailer!

I'm assuming (silly me) by "bike", you mean a pedal style. 40 miles is a good jaunt. Keep thinking I need to get my fat a$$ back on one. Used to ride alot when I was younger. Maybe I will when I get out of this rainy state

Way to go TB!

I rode my bike yesterday for the 2nd time since hurting my back in Feb. I did a mere 8 miles but it felt great

Now was that jogger looking at, ahem, your bike, just before she shouted? :p

ThrillBilly:

I recently spent a week in Atlanta playing golf (Peachtree, East Lake, Atlanta Athletic, etc.) and was pleasantly surprised at the number of serious (-looking) road cyclists around the parts of town I was in. With the terrain, the area looks like a great place to ride. Beats the heck out of the flats in this part of Northern California. Here we use wind to simulate elevation changes...

rick- the bike will certainly help shed pounds, but for me, its really more about blowing the cobwebs out of my dusty old head. i hope you still have a bike, because your gonna need a loan officer if you need to buy a new one!

tracy- any miles are good miles, just getting out there is the biggest hurdle. and YES, its kinda hard to conceal the snake while wearing them "funny britches"!

DT- sounds like you had a nice golf outing here. i dont chase the ball, but i understand that the courses are very nice. those hills were my strategic advantage in years gone by. i could crack alot of better men on the short but frequent hills here. but alas, i now shudder to think of some of the hills i used to ride everyday. maybe by fall i will have reset the legs/lungs into generators again.

I wish I had a good place to ride. I bought a new bicycle last December at Costco. A surprisingly nice one with disk brake on the front tire, and lightweight. I've ridden a whopping four miles on the thing. Too damn many loose dogs around here, and too out of shape to keep up a pace to outrun 'em. My sensitivity to the humidity around here only makes things worse.

To get off of these roads, is to share the road with 60 mph traffic with no shoulders.

It's a mountain bike. Although, I think I'll look into Montana over California. They have better winters.

Howdy DP,
They may have "better" winters but here you can ride your mountain bike year round

True, you may be able to ride year 'round. But you cannot snowmobile in those places, and there are WAY too many people in the warm climes there.

I miss having seasons, and I miss seeing huge, snowcapped mountains. Montana doesn't tax you into the poorhouse either.

I sold mine many years ago. But yeah, I was gonna get into mountain biking a few years ago(as we have some awesome trails practically in my backyard out here), but started looking at bike prices It got moved lower on my priority list.

One could buy a nice W124 for what I spent building my LeMond. Of course, the Victoire has more titanium in it...
