need help with reccomendation for vehicle

My company is replacing my current company vehicle. The budget guidelines are---- new: c$20k, or used: c$15k. ( some flexibility)
I have been driving about 1000 miles per week so operating costs are a consideration. At 1000 miles per week so is comfort!
I travel to various construction sites, mostly with no passengers. I carry a minor amount of equipment--the largest is a box about 3ft long by 18inches high and 18inches wide.
Access to the sites is sometimes difficult; muddy roads.
A full size pickup is available when I need to carry larger loads.

Suggestions are appreciated.
Right now the list includes the following new vehicles: Jetta TDI wagon, Hyuandai Sante Fe, Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, Chev Colorado, Jeep Liberty diesel ( late availability)

Have you looked at the new Chevy Equinox?

Doesn't look too bad.

How about a '79 Mercedes-Benz 300CD. I know of one for sale in Washington state, I've heard the guy is into Subies now.

How well does a Jetta handle off-road conditions?

My vote goes to the Liberty, after the diesel option is made available.

Thanks for the replies.

I appreciate the input.
I didn't mention that the time-frame is July; not sure I can wait until the introduction of the Liberty diesels---However, the comapny owner is GOOD friends with the local Jeep dealer. Maybe something will work out.
I see the Subarus but have heard they were thirsty for fuel. What kind of mileage do you get?
Another firend said that Nissan Titans are available (new) from Carmax for $22K---can anyone confirm that?

Thanks again
Michael

Oops, show's I can't read huh? I really don't know how well it can handle, but I would look around your job sites that can be muddy and see what you're fellow co-workers manage to show up in....

That oversight on my part aside the Ford ranger/Mazda pickup (same thing) are very well engineered. I have 165k on my '95 and it still does not burn a drop of oil after 6,000 mile oil change interval's with Mobil 1 synthetic. The only thing I've had to replace on the truck has been tires and a clutch. A few things are a bit over due at the moment but they can hardly be attributed to ford (things like shocks, plugs, etc).

As far as comfort goes... the seats are pretty comfortable, but the ride is a little harsh. If you manage to keep something heavy in the bed its nice and smooth though (all pickups no?)

G'luck in you're search, hopefully you will be able to get that diesel liberty!
