Question Any idea how to make a computer defrag when it won't?

Yet another computer question for the forum's collective intelligence!

My computer is ridiculously slow. I have Comcast high speed internet and it seems as slow as dial up. It can't even keep up with my typing, and I'm not all that great!

When I move things acrross the screen, they jump, rather than have fluid movement, etc.

I tried to defrag it, but it won't do it. It freezes up.

Any idea short of my throwing this POS out the window of what I can do??

I have Window Millenium Edition, crap that it is.

Thanks for any help.

Try deleting your cache stefano. Under Tools in your browser, go to Internet options, general, delete files.

How much open hard disk space do you have?

Windows Me is an incredibly bad piece of software.

Thanks guys. I'll first try deleting the cache.

I do have XP, but I'm too much of a scaredy-cat to install it!

XP should install pretty easy, unless your machine is really old and doesn't meet the hardware requirements.

OK, since this is already a computer thread....

I have another question,
When I run AdAware, it shows "34 processes running".
I have bben told that, that is too many. How do I get details on these "processes". Indeed, what are "processes"?. How can I stop some of them? Should I stop them?
Help......

go to Start-run, type 'msconfig', go to startup. these are the programs that startup when you turn your computer on. many
you dont need until you are using them and they just take up
resources. uncheck the programs you dont need to automaticly
start (games, printers, ect.) Do Not mess with any other tab.
the other tabs can be irrevolkably dangerous

to speed up go to windows explorer-tools-internet options-general-temporary internet files. then delete files/cookies.
then defrag.

i think windowsMe is better than win Xp home edition.

tHERE IS A FAST DEFRAG FREEWARE PROGRAM AVAILABLE HERE.
I found it on tech tv screensavers show. Comcast sucks, I agree; they have been here four times and agree the internet is slow but I keep getting the runaround and escalated to the next service level, I have pretty much given up on them.

The problem he is describing, he types, and his keystrokes take a long time to show on the screen, would have nothing to do with defragging. He has either a virus, a hardware problem, a corrupted operating system, or he has run out of open disk space.
On addition, you should open up the computer and see if you see anything like this going on inside:

If so, it should be professionally repaired.

I had EXACTLY that problem, and I am also running ME. I am relatively sure you have the same problem I had, which is the Coolwebsearch Trojan. Here is a link about it, and the removal tool download is free!

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip

(this may actually be the download to fix it. I'll post something else with just the info link)

Here, you can read all about it, alot of the symptoms should sound familiar, especially the "lag time" when keyboarding. I learned about CWS here from someone, who clued me in about this. MAN I was about ready to throw this ME-running trashcan in the junk for sure. Fixed me right up. Still looking forward to dumping this whole thing next year. I'll be looking for new-computer opinions at that time! Anyways, here's the link:

If that fails, switch to an Apple.
The model shown below is far superior to Windows Me, and inexpensive as well:

Gilly,

Thanks for the information! I'll try it and see if it will work.

I did click on both links and neither one would open. Instead, my computer directs me to a site called "shopnav", which I think is the viral culprit. It began to appear a few months ago.

I installed a well know spyware program for $30. Even that doesn't get rid of it.

Later tonight I'll play with it and see what I can do.

Is there a homepage or name to this downloadable program that I can type in directly?
