W126 value(s)-opinions please

Not to far from where I live is a near-showroom condition 1991 300SE with only 48000 miles. It is SUPER-nice and highly desirable, but has been sitting, far as I can tell, for nearly a year on the lot of a very reputable independent dealer.

Why, you say? Maybe because they are asking $23k?

Now... hmmm....

....would anyone on this board even consider buying this vehicle at this price, and if not, what would you counter-offer?

Is it possible a good 'ol 126 with just a M103 motor can still retain this much intrinsic value (value to a real MB enthusiast-more specifically), vs. say, a really nice '71 280SE 3.5 of similar condition, which would probably be worth that much, no?

I'm just trying to get a bearing on the market, and would even consider purchasing this vehicle, but for 23k???

What am I missing here?

Yep, overpriced. Even the nicest w126 is still a depreciating asset. OTO, it's the last and best year for a w126, and the 300SE is probably the most Euro w126 sold over here. If it had a manual transmission (not available in the U.S.) I'd probably marry it.
Whoa now, son. Go over and take a look at the purdy girls thread.

-------------------

I just don't think I could pay that much for a car over 20 years of age. I take that back, there are some that have obvious collector's status, but those are few. Will this one ever be collectible? I doubt it, so it will continue depreciating, especially if you drive it a lot. Unless your planning on it being an investment (collectible) there's not much sense in not driving it.

etc.

Really nice car though. I wonder what I would pay for it? $12-$15K, maybe? I dunno.

It is a nice car but $10k is the most I'd pay for a W126. Their old cars now, rack up 100K on that thing and you would be lucky to get 8k for it.

Yeah.. it's been there for a LONG time.

It'll find a home some day... some day...

They had an even nicer black 560SEL for like $25k or something like that.

All black, black interior, fully loaded, low miles (obviously) and PERFECT. I never saw a W126 that nice...

yeah, I remember that 560, very sweet. but that did sell eventually--during the winter I think.

Its an interesting place, that's for sure. The craftsmanship on the restoration vehicles is just mind-blowing.

They now have a black on black 300SEL 6.3 in the showroom, very very evil looking--so perfect, showrrom condition. Its not on the website yet.

When I went to have a look at the SE last Friday, the back lot was FULL of cars in for service, or waiting to be picked up, so they must be doing something right.

They actually did some service on our wagon last year, and it was very reasonable.

They are smoking crack! Oh hell no, that car is not even worth half what they are trying to get. Give me a 210 E430 any day of the week over that car. You can get them cheaper than that with around the same mileage. I have a 210 E55 and a 126 SEC. The E handles muh better, gets better mileage, looks nicer, and has more comfortable seats.

Yeah,

they brought that 300SEL 6.3 to several car shows (quite rightly) and it is a beautiful one..

definitely the nicest 6.3, I've ever seen in my life too :p

some of their cars are definitely not for me but... it's always nice to just look at them and even look at the cars waiting for service

I bought a mint 1989 300SE, with 83,000 miles, for $13,200. That was four years ago, just to give you an idea. Great car, by the way.

I love my 126's but unless you plan to drive this car only on the second Sunday in the month of June every other year it will be just another nice 300 sel after a couple years of normal driving, worth about 65 hundred dollars if you replace the cracked windshield and have that crease in the left front fender repaired........
