1978 300CD Yard Find. Transmission Issue

Got the car running within an hour of getting it back. Sat for atleast 20 years. Transmission won't upshift from second but downshift to 1st when using kickdown or when kickdown is disconnected using L. Has the older style non vacuum, control rod operated transmission. Took the atf filter off and saw that it was crushed from a dent in the pan. Hammered out the pan and put a new one in. Same issue. At a loss at the moment but I want to check the governor. I am unaware of how. 123.150 with the 722.118 Trans. Thanks

There is a small screen type filter to the governor IIRC that can clog and cause this issue.

Shifts to second from first now that I changed the filter. No windsheild so I can't road test it around me to see if it will go from 2->3. Anyone got a windsheild source?

I don't have a source. As you may already know, the coupe windshield is coupe only.

Nice work getting it running so fast. If it's stuck in 2nd and downshifts but won’t upshift, the governor is a good next check. On the 722.118, the governor is mounted on the tail of the trans, remove the rear output housing to access it.

Was able to find a windsheild and get the gasket. Now the car is not shifting from 1st to second anymore. Could be that I messed with the manual modulator too much and the control rod. Tried to put them back into position but still no luck. Should this transmission shift if I were to test the shifting on blocks? Or does it need the resistance of the road? No windsheild installed yet. Thanks for the governor tip. Can you provide any more details on checking the governor? Thanks

It should shift with the wheels in the air. Check for vacuum at the modulator.
