Talking

Today, I completed all the wiring and started the engine for the first time since I took it all apart. So far with very limited testing Air pump Works good, No leaks from oil level sensor or power steering pump. Radiator is not installed yet. I'm still waiting for one last fitting. For the past two days the tracking says "Label created". Maybe Monday it will say "Backing peeled off the label. Tuesday "Label applied to the package". Wednesday "Package moved from labeling area to shipping dock". Thursday "Package picked up by post office", Friday "I'm sorry we lost your package". Tomorrow will be a good day to install the front suspension.

I will run this year with R134. If all goes well I will install the good stuff R12. I only have 3 cans of that left. I may even wait until I get the car painted before putting in the R12.

I'm using PAO oil 68 so I can swap refrigerants at will.

All seems to be working so far. I still will need to figure out how to make the aux fan come on at low speed. This is especially important when you have an electric fan fro the radiator that only comes on if the radiator temp is too hot. So a little more wiring. I also have an issue where I may have to break the AC lines once again to re index the fuel cooler. Currently if I try to connect the fuel cooler the line will hit the inlet of the mass flow sensor. Still a lot of cleaning up to do and reassembly of the interior.

Thumbs up Good AC !

I'm envious ~ my 240D has the Sanden compressor and paralel flow over sized condenser yet I still only get 50* F out the dash board vents....

I was driving in in the 97 ~ 100 * heat to -day and we were comfortable but I'd love to have 40* air blowing on me....

All is not perfect yet. That testing was performed on a 70° F day and with my radiator fan jumped and blowing full on. Buy the way check your fan operation. That turned out to be really important. I see myself playing with PWM fan controls very shortly for both my radiator and AC fans.

Post AC Condenser Fan

It works fine, I do check, it's very noisy .

I took the safety finger guard off my 300CD to quiet it down and increase air flow .

Got in a few test runs today. Everything seems fine but I really cant test the air conditioning out to well because its only 65° F out. The two days prior to me charging the AC system it was 85° F outside. Now there is not an 80°+ day in sight for 2 weeks. Oh well at least I will get a chance to clean up the shop so I can mess it up again on the next project. So with this done I cleared up several issues.

1) AC installed and working still needs some minor work with aux fan wiring.
2) Two oil leaks from the front main seal and the oil level sensor
3) Air pump fixed
4) Tandem pump from R129 replaced with single R129 pump
5) Vacuum lines under intake manifold replaced
6) Degraded wires to oil level sensor and alternator fixed.

That was a long and difficult job that took over 5 months and about $4400 in parts and tools. Considering I did the engine installation in 1 year while I was still working full time, I'm not exactly sure which is worse. Although my age is taking its tole on speed.

My wife tells me I'm her ***** for the next couple of days.

Does it work fine at low speed or just high.

Is your compressor cycling. Mine cycles off at about 42°F and cycles back on at about 50°F.

Are you using 134 or R12?

Post AC Fun (not)

Thanx John ;

I was talking about the AC in my W123 Coupe, it died the first hot day we had here and honestly I've been busy elsewhere and have not looked at it .

I don't recall if R12 or R134a, I have three W123's and I prefer R12 but some have R134a in them .

Washer reservoir is due in today. In the mean time I have completed figuring out all the additional wiring and components required to make my Aux fans work properly and all parts are on order including required connectors from MB and parts to properly sheath new wires and tie them in place. I also found that my lower radiator hose was starting to get a bit soft to a new Silicone one was ordered and will be installed. So just when I thought I was close all that little crap added up to an additional $400. That will include the installation of a variable speed fan controller from Summit Racing to allow the AC system to over ride the electric radiator fan and turn it on 60% when the engine is idling and the radiator is not up to temp enough to turn the fan on itself. That will make it better mimic the mechanical fan in traffic situations. The rest of the stuff was a relay and hiring harness parts to allow the auxiliary fans to work with the M117 thermal sensors and shut down the compressor and turn on the Aux fans as needed. In addition it also includes replacement MD tie wraps that hold all these wires to the chassis as well as sleeving for the wires so it doesn't look like a hot rodders mess of wires under the hood. It will be a few weeks for all this stuff to arrive, at least the stuff from MB, but it will all be in time for the really hot weather when all that stuff is necessary. In the mean time we will finally get some 80° weather to test out what I have for the moment.

Looks like 1 gal will fit perfectly. No room for any more. No need for me to worry about the Corona virus because this thing is going to give me cancer.

I was pacing the floor like an expecting father trying to figure out how to cut the top off. Finally tried something that was easy. I also realized that this reservoir also fits a shock MB pump perfectly.

I get a kick out of that. I see those warnings when I buy bolts. So all is not well after a week I have no AC. Time to start tracking down a leak.

There is a stone guard. Its been removed to install it.
