Post Avionics Tech

Ah, HA ! I suspect you're an air craft Mechanic .

I too worry about the possibility of soldered joints cracking but in general I have better life out of soldered than only crimped connectors .

When I was with L.A.P.D. Air Support they'd fabricate and replace the wiring harness' in the Bells and Aerosplats on a regular basis .

I prefer one and done but then I'm not flying so I can always pull over if necessary .

Fun with Crimping

I just received a new tool for crimping the open barrel terminals required to terminate all the parts for the fuse block. I tried it out today with some terminals that have the same style crimp. I have to say I'm impressed. I was a little hesitant to buy it because it did not have a die for 0.75mm^2 wire, which is the most common wire in the R107 and R129. But the 1 to 1.5 mm^2 die worked perfectly for the 0.75mm^2 see the picture of the green wire. I also tried it on an 18ga wire and 2 18ga wires into a 14 ga terminal. Works perfectly. The tool is a Fryic model VSN-03B. Im so happey with it I just ordered there model VSN-10A for other types of terminals I have

Conclusion: Perfect style OE crimps for $25.00.

In a matter of a few weeks I should be back on the road.

Fitting of the footplate module box did require one more iteration, involving moving one mount over 1/4" to clear wiring. With that complete I added chaffing strip around the perimeter of the plate. It was the top left corner that chaffed against the wire that caused the short circuit. That wire has since been rerouted and is no longer in the main wire harness where it can do extensive damage. But there are other wires so the chaffing strip has been added and secured with weather strip adhesive and SS lock wire. All lockwire ends are in back of the plate where no wires are. Lockwire and chaffing strip were then covered over with electrical tape for an added layer of protection. The yellow areas on the plate are marked out points where wires cannot be, as the cover comes down in these areas. Hopefully this will go in tomorrow without issues. The last picture is the area I will need to cut out for the ESP module to come through the top cover. A new floor cover will be fabricated to cover that area.

Getting Down to the Wire Literally

A mock up of the fuse/relay block mount is complete along with the mounting points in the car put in place. The pictures shows the mount. This one is extra long to be able to accommodate two extra blocks if ever required. I just wanted to see if I had room for expansion or there is the possibility of putting 2 power taps directly onto the fuse relay block, which is something I might do if I build another car. I sent out to have a finalized version cut and that will be in next week. In the mean time I can use this to install the block and start the wiring. All the wiring pinouts have been figured out. Lets hope I don't start a fire.

A day of wiring from hell. I got as far as I could go and then ran out of terminals. One of the sets of terminals I ordered did not fit into the blocks. Apparently the smaller terminals from Littlefuse company for wires under 1.0mm^2 are only available by special order in minimum quantities of 2500. I thought I found another company but they just wouldn't got in. So I ordered the next larger size for wires 1.0 to 2.5mm and they will be in Thursday. So my plan is to fold the end of the wire over to make it thicker and use the larger terminals. So that leaves me with about 10 wires to terminate and then I can install the fuse relay block. Unfortunately Friday I leave for a wedding in CT so this should be finished by next week. Theoretically I could put the dashboard on at that time but I still want to make proper mounts for other components that have been tye wrapped in place.

At this time all wires are cut, labeled and terminated ready to install into the fuse/relay block. Fabrication of the fuse block mount is complete with exception of paint drying. Tonight I will turn the parts over to paint the bottom. Tomorrow with a fresh head I will do the installation. I may run into 1 problem that may delay things for another week. I was afraid to cut the wires too short so they may actually be too long and need to be cut and re terminated. I will find out shortly.

Didn't get it started yet but the fuse/relay block is mounted in position. I had to stop because the wife is coming home. I may continue after about 9:30 tonight. It will probably require several more R&Rs to trim down wires to more acceptable lengths and to place harness clamps. But I'm confident with it now.

Took Samson out for the first drive in 3 months. Of course I had a fire extinguisher with me. Still not ready to install the dash but all the really hard carp is complete. What's left are little brackets to mount stuff like the OBDII and diagnostic ports and a few stray modules. I will also need to make covers for under the dash and the passenger foot well. But those can be done with the dash installed.

Everything works perfectly.

I haven done anything on Samson for a while and I wont do any more until I can clean the mess. I have no place to put all the little bits of hardware I had to purchase to do the AC and main wire harness. So I had to purchase another storage compartment boxes and 4 more large bins for my pallet racks. The large bins came in for both my 129 and 107 wire harnesses. I could use 2 more. One small steel compartment box came in already but 4 more and a rack to hold them will be in next week. This weekend will be a trip to the dump to get rid of 2 useless R129 differentials a 107 gas tank and two AC condensers. I've packed up a bunch of other parts and put them up for sale on E-bay. Good news is, I'm starting to see my table top again.
