190E 2,3 16v 1988- heater controls illumination

I would be grateful if you could advise on the function of the instrument illumination control unit and an unidentified connector. From the wiring diagram the output from the control unit to connector X6 is the red/grey wire which then supplies 12v to the heater control bulbs and surround. However the other wire appears to connect to a rectangular shaped connector (see attachments) which also appears to connect to grey blue wires for heater control illumination. All the cluster, heater controls etc should illuminate on activation of the exterior light switch. The 12v and ground supply to control unit is OK. Did you ever get an answer. I would say it’s your fuse on the back of your instrument cluster.
