Duke, you are correct, the dead soldier is a 2002.
Not really much damage to the W210, but 3 of the seat belts don't work any longer.

Finally took picture and found error

Seems the 'rattle' is a rusted exhaust connector. The weld I was speaking of was still holding.

So, no engine mounts needed. (The engine sits steady.)

On the exception basis, the mirror on the passenger door properly tilts down when car in reverse.

the other 95% of the time, the mirror does not tilt down.

I was dumbfounded when the misfire would stay on cylinder 7 but 'float' among the other cylinders. (3, 7 and 8 were the most common) But your suggestion of the 'computer' not adjusting properly...
