Try using some "ether" also called "starting fluid" instead of brake-clean sometime! I find that it cleans much faster, and it cost about .50 cheaper too! Also may be safer!

I used a car cover all last winter over my 87 300D and the clearcoat was dulled at all four fender corners. Even after tightening the cover, the wind still caused the cover to chafe!

I would doubt it is caused by the heatsheild! Leathermang is right about balancing with pop tester, but if it was missing it's shim, it would nail, and might not if reinstalled even if it is not...
