There's no shortcut, pull the trim and have it re-anodized. Much cheaper then chrome (I was right about $500 for my entire 300D). It will be perfect and last another 30+ years.

Get someone in the back seat to push the seat (from the bottom so you don't break the seatback) while you pull the lever up. Work it back and forth and it should free up.

I can't confirm, but I believe any W123 seat will fit any W123. There are no electronic compatibility issues like the W126.

I'd pick one up right this second if I hadn't inadvertently swapped a perfect (pre 82) header panel into my 83. It didn't occur to me until I had it in and went to reinstall the dome light.

The wood pops off the front of the climate control. Behind it are 2 screws to remove the module from the dash. Once that's out you can reach the back of the top row of switches.
