Almost looks like a copper ring around the center of the EGR that seals down into the mating surface on the housing much like is used on some of the MB exhaust fittings.

Unless the OM611 is dead/unrepairable why would you want to trade it for the 603? The 611 is superior in efficiency and power. I've driven in one in a S203 Europe, it was fantastic!
